Default New cage

Hi,
because of cats I do have to buy a new cage. I stand between a terrarium, duna cage or the skyline. I think about the price at a terrarium and the bottle hole in duna cage, and the woos in skyline. What do you recommend?

Which Skyline cage? Do you mean the marrakesch? Is it for a syrian or a dwarf hamster? Which terrarium did you have in mind? The Exo terra 90 x 45 x 45 is a good size for all hamsters but costs a lot of money. The Maxi duna multy is good for a dwarf (easy to block off the bottle hole, don't worry about that - just a nut and bolt) - but as it's lighter, cats could push it off a table possible.

The Marrakesch has the tininest mesh holes and is fairly weighty so probably the most secure. But really the cats shouldn't be allowed in the same room as the hamster. I assume the safer cage is just in case a cat gets in the room?

I would probably go with the 100cn Skyline Marrakesch - but do keep the hamster in a room the cats aren't allowed in.

I wouldn't support putting a hamster in a typical terrarium/vivarium. Their ventilation is incredibly poor and you could find yourself with quite the ammonia build-up as well as the insides having low amounts of oxygen.

The best option there is the 100cm Skyline Marrakesh terrarium. It's the best option and has decent ventilation, and spacious enough to comfortably house a Syrian (unless your hamster doesn't think so, as some can be quite restless in 100cm enclosures).

You MUST get the 100cm Marakesh however. There is a smaller variant, that is 73.5 x 44 x 35 cm internally, which is far too small for a Syrian.

And the Marrakesch has very fine mesh on top - no gaps between bars. And a solid lid - although I would still put a lock on the lid in case a cat tried to lift it open. Definitely not the Maxi Duna multy which has open bars on top and could easily be pushed onto the floor.

Could even go for a "child-safe" lock using a bobble or something.

The marrakesch. I found the exo terra 90 cm used for 200 dollars. It is for a dwarf.

Exo Terras CAN be made into hamster homes, but I still am not massively fond of them.

For starters, there's 2 options for 90cm Exo Terra's:
  • 90x45x30cm (l x w x h)
    90x45x45cm (l x w x h)
I struggle to see how you could get a strong amount of bedding into the confines of an Exo Terra. You would most definitely have enough for the hamster to submerge itself, but not enough to make a decent burrowing system, which I think we all want for our hamsters. This is my main fault with Exo Terra's as they are otherwise a brilliant find and, at the cost that you found it, an excellent home for hamsters.

90x50 is practically the minimum, which is something I thought should be mentioned. If you're splurging on such a cage, then the size of the cage and further the overall quality of the hamsters life should be what's being considered the most.

The one I found is 90*50 cm.

It won't be an exo terra then. They are 90 x 45. I think it's a fine size for any hamster. You could have deeper bedding at one end if you only use one of the doors, but the 90 x 45 does hold 6" and many people are fine with that in cages. Providing the hamster has a good house/nesting box that mimics a burrow they are happy with 5 to 6" of substrate.

If a cat got in the room though it could rip the top mesh of an exo terra - it is very very fine mesh - easily chewed through (by a cat or a hamster but the hamster is unlikely to be able to get to the top of the 90 x 45 x 45). But it would be a good option if you can mesh the roof or make a new top for it.

I think the Marrakesch is safer and less hassle (and that is also about 95 x 45 internally).
