Default Cork log tunnels

Where do you all get your cork log tunnels from? Hopes healthy treat and rodipet are sold out. It seems it is getting difficult to find them now. When I look at the ones sold for reptiles they do not say the diameter so I would not be sure if they are suitable.

That's a shame Rodipet are out of stock. I think they must be having supply issues as all their cork wheels are out of stock too and will be for over a month apparently. You could try emailing them and asking them when they will be back in stock again (which is what I did with the wheels). I usually get the largest size that are open underneath (for Syrians) unless you actually want to use it as a tube/tunnel. Because it's high enough to use as a ramp and when I had a solid one it got peed in!

I get them from there because they are the length they say they are, which fits a hamster cage. You can get them from Reptile places on Amazon but they are usually huge! And weird and wonderful shapes. It is probably possible to saw them smaller but I haven't tried. They are also often pretty mucky and need a good wash inside and out with a brush and then to dry out,

Most of the supplies (including the cork log) I've used in Raffy's cage were bought last autumn when I got Pip - things I had no space for in his cage, so had all been previously frozen so I didn't have a time issue for freezing things when getting Raffy! The cork log was from Rodipet and it is the muckiest grungiest one I've ever had from there. It needed a really good scrub out inside. I swear it had soil inside! Or just not quite as cleaned up as usual. But they clean up ok.

I think anywhere but Rodipet and you will get varying lengths and widths. If it's no good, send it back and try another one. But they will probably be very long. I would think they are sawable though, with a good saw or bits might break off.

Thank you both. I saw one in zooplus which has bad reviews.

I was looking to buy a tunnel type but maybe the open one would be better actually. I saw some reptile ones are narrow in the middle so a hamster would not be able to use it.

Gosh, the cork log sounds so dirty! I have one from rodipet but it is huge and not suitable for a cage so I will use it in a playpen.

I've bought lots of cork logs from Zooplus and they've mostly been fine. They are very messy things and tend to drop soil or bits of cork as you get them out of the box. They can also have lichen on them which is fine. There was only one cork log from Zooplus that arrived with some black spots that I thought could be mould so I didn't use it in a cage. I put it in the garden to use as a kind of planter.

Zooplus only sell tubes whereas Rodipet have different shapes. The large size from Zooplus is very large and might not fit in all cages but the smaller size should be fine for almost any hamster (obviously being a natural product they all vary).

The top two are the Large size, the bottom one is Medium, plus a toilet paper tube for scale.

Thank you Sushi. That is helpful. After Serendipity pointing out a hamster will wee inside, I think I will try to get the open ones.

I have the large size in Raffy's cage! I don't think it's that big really - it's tall and maybe a bit wider than the medium. The length is about the same for all of them. It depends what you want it for. I've always got the large size because it's an interesting texture for them to climb over - gives higher overhead cover, and tall enough to use as a ramp under a shelf. He has used it to run up onto the shelf but also just pulls himself onto the shelf at the front lol. Just to add it's not the only access to the shelf as it is quite steep (for an older hamster that is) - he also has the plastic tube run to get onto the shelf.

You can also push it down into the substrate to make it lower so I find the large size more versatile. You can't adjust the height of the lower ones. But it is wider perhaps if space is premium.

I have it part going under the shelf so part is a way of accessing the shelf (by running up the side) and it's partly a tunnel going under the shelf. The bigger ones also work well as substrate dividers if you want it higher on one side than the other.

Thank you Serendipity. What I was concerned about was a hamster being squashed by the weight. I know all ceramic type hides need to be on platforms and anything else that is heavy. I wondered if a hamster was to go under the log, if it would be dangerous?

Nope - they are incredibly light! It's why I think they're great - they can just sit on the substrate and no need for support. Like cardboard weight really. Maybe if it was a tiny robo or dwarf hamster and the large one it "might" be an issue but I honestly don't think it would sink far enough to squash them. They just don't really sink. I had the large one for our first robo as well and he loved running up it and sitting under it. I actually got this one for Pip but it didn't fit in his cage as I had a lot of other big things in there.
