Re: Cork log tunnels
Haha, I thought mine felt too heavy and was dangerous. I am so afraid of my hamster being squashed. They seem so fragile. I am not sure which species of hamster I will be adopting. So I can use the cork log I have for a Syrian then. If I get a robo or dwarf then I will not use it. Thank you for sharing your experience with me.

Re: Cork log tunnels
Cloudy I use cork logs with my robo, I think because they are long and wide so the weight is spread out over a much larger area than say a way heavier ceramic hide. Also if need be a cork log is chewable whereas a ceramic hide isn't.
Also, the only time I have had a hamster wee in a cork log was when I submerged one under the bedding, I fixed that by sawing it in half, never been a problem on top of the surface.
It's always good to watch your hamster when you first put them in a new cage setup just to make sure they don't get up to something they shouldn't be

Thank you Cosmic. I remember seeing Comet had a cork log. I assumed it was a lighter one. This is reassuring. I like the idea of putting forage on top for a hamster to find. I will be sure to watch them.

Re: Cork log tunnels
I would think a complete circular cork log would be a bit heavier than one that is a semi circle/open underneath, yes, but cork is naturally light. It won't even sink in substrate unless pushed down - and because the area is so spread, it can't really squash a hamster in one area if tunnelled under. Not like a heavy ceramic bowl or a heavy wood house eg. But I take your point if it's a particular large one, that is a full circle rather than half circle, and a dwarf hamster - unless one end is supported on something eg.
I think if a hamster tunneled under it so it went further down, even if the hamster tunneled all the substrate out under it right to the bottom of the cage, they could still get out from under it or push it up a bit!

Haha, thank you. Maybe I am too anxious. I am used to guinea pigs and they are so much bigger.

Re: Cork log tunnels
i'm a tad late to this but they sell them in pets at home in the reptile area i'm pretty sure. also off topic but don't buy them from amazon!!! mine arrived today and it was literally just 5 pieces of wood, it wasn't even a broken cork log it was just multiple pieces of wood. but yeah, i'd try ur local pets at home if ur still looking for one.

Thank you for the tip. What a shame the ones you bought are not suitable. I would tell Amazon and they will arrange a return.
