Re: Carolina Storm Wheel
He says it's supposed to be like that and fine. I've emailed exotic nutrition and asked them if it's supposed to be like that and if they have changed the wheel and will see what they say!
I'll probably ask to send it back anyway. Thankfully it's not an urgent situation as that can get stressful when your hamster has no wheel! I once had to buy an urgent flying saucer next day delivery when a wheel broke.

Re: Carolina Storm Wheel
Always best to have a Trixie as a backup but the newer ones aren't much good. I have an old one that came with a second hand cage which Clive is running on just now and i have a newish one which already looks slightly twisted. I think quality has gone out the window generally.
Scottie's silent runner is a slightly different design from Gertie's so they have changed it.

Re: Carolina Storm Wheel
Serendipity, looking at your pics, are you sure the orange strip is clicked in place, because it should fit the same on the outside as it does on the inside.
I might have to do a quick video to explain what i mean if you don't understand me.
Logically, on the outside you have the round front with the 3 gaps in it for the hamster to get in and out, then the orange strip which creates the circle which then inserts into the black part of the wheel, and going by your pic you can see the clear connector thingy, so the same for the inside. i have the tiniest of gaps but it's covered by the black part from the outside and on the inside is maybe only 1mm if that. I can maybe just get the end of my fingernail in it.

Re: Carolina Storm Wheel
It seems to be Luna. Won’t push together any more than that. It can’t really because the outside joining piece is butted up to both edges.
Interesting Ria that your two silent runners are different. In what way?

Re: Carolina Storm Wheel
Serendipity, I have just spent far too long pulling two silent runners to pieces a 9 and 12 inch one
So from what I can see because the black part on the wheel is deeper on the outside than the inside and then the same again on the part that is the front of the wheel, where the strip clicks into, you will always have a tiny gap on the inside at both ends, but it is tiny and should always be covered by the black part or the front cover on the outside.
So, yes there are gaps, but they should be tiny.

Re: Carolina Storm Wheel
Yes I worked that out too - because it's deeper on the outside there will be a gap. So I think it must have changed. And yes under the gap is part of the black or orange cover but it's bigger than 1mm and I don't like it! I think they have changed it.

Re: Carolina Storm Wheel
Exotic nutrition just replied saying they have not changed the production/manufacture of them and confirmed that the seller saying this is normal is correct and should not cause any harm. And Silent Runner Wheels are known for their safety. (Well they were yes, but I saw a similar complaint on a sugar glider forum!).
So I guess that's the situation. Wish I still had my old ones to look at as I'm sure they weren't like that. They need to have a better joining strip then that's longer on one side than the other so it fits up to the edge on both sides. Wodent wheels managed it.
Sorry to bang on again. It's probably fine but it bugs me.
I see your point though Luna - because the gap has something solid underneath, they can't get a toe trapped in a gap exactly, just catch it on a slightly uneven part if they happen to run over one side or the other for a bit. So yes it's unlikely to be an issue - but it bugs me!
Incidentally I saw a rather nice painted one on another forum! Someone had painted the whole thing cream and had coloured stickers and other decorative things all over it! After my last attempt at painting one I assume it needs a bit of sanding first!

Re: Carolina Storm Wheel
It wasn't a sugar glider forum, it was a hedgehog forum. Probably just an opinion though. Fifth post down. On the other hand maybe they didn't put it together properly. They don't consider them safe! But just one poster.

I'm rubbish at explaining so here are photos. Gertie's which was Betsy's has a bolt in the centre whereas Scottie's has a black plastic cap.
I've just noticed that they have a tiny gap too.
