Well it's all on one thread/topic about people making things I know a lot of people have been doing some very creative things and it gives ideas for others if they're all in one place! I have not been doing anything creative lol! But inspiration is nice.

I posted a photo of a painted house on page 1 and here's another.
I wished i was artistic and creative like Luna but i'm more the painting a wall decorator type.

I do love the cardboard mache idea from Luna and I’ve been racking my brains for ideas to make with that. It is very clever! Also, Ria I wouldn’t put yourself down I’ve seen some of your ideas, not just painting which you’re also very good with, but ideas like the seed tree and I think that’s brilliant, I want to make one myself!

Absolutely! I love her videos <3 Also Luna or if anyone else knows, in the mushroom video you linked some paints and I checked them out. I only thought plastikote is safe for them but from what I can tell the ones you linked are vegan. Does that mean paints that are vegan are also safe for hamsters? As I’d love to get a set and add some colour to Mitzi’s cage but I always thought I’d have to be every colour pot of plastikote!

Vegan just means no animal products of any kind, so no - not all vegan paint is safe. Garlic for example is obviously vegan being a plant and fairly well known for being unsafe for a wide variety of animals including hamsters, but there are tons of things that would be considered vegan that aren't safe and can even be deadly. You don't want hamsters chewing and ingesting paint in general though as it isn't edible and can be harmful long term(plastics etc that are completely indigestible which can lead to blockages - they do NOT break down, same reason we never want hamsters chewing plastic houses etc). You can make edible paints and dyes technically using safe food items, but premade paints and such aren't the same.

Human food grade food dye is another potential option for just adding color to things. It's not ideal(due to issues with synthetic dyes in general), but you'd at least be eliminating the very dangerous plastics and such which you really shouldn't be using on anything meant for chewing or that gets chewed from premade paints.

I understand what you’re saying. I do like the naturalistic look just sometimes colour and themes would be nicer but I have seen people make some great enclosures without any painted items. I might just look into maybe getting a greater variety of substrate as it’s probably a nicer solution for my hamster anyway.

This is definitely a reason why cages with clear backs can be a big advantage. You can completely customize the outside without adding anything that could be accessed by a hamster and cause issues, but you'd still have tons of options for adding a lot of color or quickly and easily changing themes.

Gel clings definitely work on glass, I'd imagine they should work on clear plastics like acrylic too though. You could also use different wrapping papers for backgrounds, and I've even seen some nicer floral options for example in the US in the past but there are tons of options. You can also print your own background and tape it up - alternatively you can even do the same process with different art supplies for a more unique handmade look.

Other than creating just a full background plus being useful for the outside clear sections other than just the back some cages have(or even the plastic bases of wire cages for example) you could use stickers or vinyl decals. People with Cricut machines definitely have a huge advantage in terms of being able to make basically any sort of sticker they want, but I do remember seeing sticker paper for certain types of regular printers which is another DIY option to look into.

Creative decorating for the outside of cages as well as any surfaces they're kept on can definitely make a difference. You can also decorate the wall around the cage too, and it can be done in a way that doesn't allow hamster access as long as it's not too close to any cage bars and such!

ETA I completely forgot to mention that for inside the cage you can use hamster safe dried flowers for example to add a bit of color.

The Hay Experts have these sunflower petals that would add a nice touch of yellow:

The Hay Experts also have this which could look good in a more halloween themed cage though not colorful:
