Anything, i raided my kitchen for enamel and glass pie dishes, baking tins, biscuit tins etc. I currently use £2 glass bon bon jars from Asda and the hamsters like those because they are enclosed.
You can also use tupper ware, pottery dishes etc. Whatever fits best in the space you want to place it.
You can also buy a ready made sandbath with sand for a fiver made by Rosewood i think.
Important is to keep in mind that sand is heavy and needs to either sit on the base of a cage or it needs to be supported by a strong platform, house etc so the hamster can burrow underneath it.
