I am considering getting a hamster. I am thinking of getting the Ritz cage.

I am worried that the base of the cage won't be deep enough.

Also considering if a bin cage would be a better option but I'm terrible at DIY and don't own a drill. Could possibly get someone to help.

Hello Fluffy Unicorn. I just wanted to say, you can buy platforms for putting water and food on. I bought some from Etsy. I am terrible at DIY. I am having an enclosure made for me as I would never be able to make one myself.

It’s 9.5mm bar spacing instead of 6.5mm so would be fine for a Syrian and I’ve heard people using them for Russian dwarfs but is slightly big. It’s 100x50 and has a shelf.

Also if it’s a smaller breed of hamster you’re looking for maybe the zoozone

Some people still mesh the top but it should be okay, if you wanted something without bars it’s better. There isn’t a shelf but you can get a standing one. To be honest you don’t really need food and water on a separate shelf if you don’t want to, mine aren’t. If you’re worried about mess or something you could put a bit of slate down under the food and water bowl as something solid. This one is over £100 but there’s ‘used-like new’ option for £78.

Alternatively people sell these second hand great condition for £30-£40 on Facebook marketplace. I’m based in uk so hopefully this all applies to you.

Hi, yes that cage should be fine, you can always add cardboard or grass mats to the sides if you wanted to add more depth for bedding as shown in this video:

I have used industrial strength velcro to stick water bottles to the side of bin/glass/perspex cages

Thanks everyone for your help. I decided to order the storage bin. Just realised the lid is ridged... might be difficult to cut... thinking about ordering a rotary cutter. Turning into a bit of a mission. Kind of wish I hadn't ordered it now as don't know if it will work.

I have made many bin cages and the easiest to cut are the really useful boxes and they have a flat lid. The 145l box is a good size. I use a Dremel with a pvc cutting disc and mesh the lid, a window and a back vent to ensure sufficient ventilation.
