I second the Savic Plaza Similar price to the one you linked. I have a robo in ours - I put 4" high cardboard round the inside bars, for deeper bedding inside and to reduce the height for a dwarf hamster. It has a lovely big front door which is good for interaction and taming. The cage is ideal for a Syrian as it is. The one you linked does have a very small door at the front which can make it difficult to get the hamster out of the cage.

Thank you for linking that Ritz cage though - it's the first 100cm cage of 39cm height with narrow bar spacing I have seen available in the Uk before! The only downside to is the doors are very small. Which might be ok for some more gregarious hamsters. But means taking the whole top bars off for say, taking a wheel in and out - as opposed to using a large door instead. I found when I had to do that, the hamster could leap out sometimes!

Meant to add that you need a drill to drill the holes to attach the mesh. I use cable ties and then snip the ends off. You also need a wire cutter to cut the mesh into the correct size.

Personally, i prefer barred cages with large front doors like the Savic Plaza. Our Syrians live in Alaskas and our dwarfs in Hamster Heavens.

I like the size of the Ritz you linked. It would be ideal for a dwarf hamster because it's fairly low but i couldn't cope with the small door for the same reasons Serendipity has already mentioned.

Thank you for all your comments. I have decided to get either the ritz or the plaza cage. Thank you for your suggestions and ideas for providing deeper bedding.

Is the savic plaza suitable for a dwarf hamster?

Sorry just realised you already said you have a robo in yours, so yes.

It is fairly tall, even for a Syrian. Taller than average but not too tall. So the height increases risk of injuries from falls (if they climb to the roof and monkey bar along). So that's why I put 4" cardboard around the inside bars (attached it with some cable ties) and had deeper bedding. Which raises the substrate level so the cage is lower It basically gives you about 10" deep substrate then and a lower cage (and doesn't obstruct the door). It does use a lot of substrate doing that, but the more you use, the less often you need to change it - dwarf hamsters pee very little and you can just keep spot cleaning for a long time (if you can actually find the bit they've pee'd on!). It usually becomes clear eventually where they're peeing then you just take a handful or two out and add another handful or two.

Even with the raised substrate I was a little concerned ours could fall onto the ladder or something else (these tiny ones get injured easily with falls). So I also attached a very large fleece hammock to the roof inside. Plus a large egg box hammock next to it - over the lower areas and harder items. This was partly to prevent monkey barring across the roof. What actually happened was, he could get into the egg box hammock from his shelf quite easily and from there to the hammock and actually uses it and gets off at the other side onto the main shelf.

When I get chance I'll add a photo to show you what I mean! Set up needs to be done carefully for them but the main thing is that they can't land on anything hard or sharp - they're fine landing on soft substrate.

The cage you linked is better in that way - the height is good and the bar spacing is good for a dwarf hamster (although I've had no problems with the 9mm bar spacing on the Plaza.

If the hamster is the type to come to the door to want to come out then the small door at the front wouldn't be an issue - but I think it could be very frustrating to always have to take the bars off to put anything in the cage or try to get the hamster out - and the hamster could jump out of the cage instead.

With the large front opening door they do seem to interact better and get used to you being there and feel less enclosed. To be on the safe side I have a couple of large cushions on the floor in front of the cage - as our cage is quite high up on a table - just in case they try and jump out! But none of them have so far! Our syrian used to put his paws on it and have a good look out of the door and come nose to nose with you for a conversation. Our robo did tease me a few times by running at the door but then swerved round and went up the ladder instead!

It's hard to put into words, but when the large door is open it's like they are still in their safe environment and you are not invading it - but they can also interact with you. With a smaller door you might have to stick your hand in to pick them up. With the larger door I put a cube or ball at the edge and they can climb in.

But the lower cage would be a lot easier to set up safely and I'm sure you could put a tube through the front door for them to walk into.

Most of us prefer a large front door because a) your hand isn't coming from the top b) you can get both hands in the cage (eg if you need to use a tube to get the hamster out if they're shy - then you can put a hand over each end and lift it out c) you can take houses and wheels in and out without needing to remove the top bars.

Thank you so much for your informative response. The plaza is looking like a better option. Would love to see a photo and I'm open to suggestions for preventing falls.

Did you have a look at the thread "Let's see your cages" on the Forum under Housing?

My robos set up in the Plaza is further down the page on the link below. You can see the cardboard inside the bars. It makes the height about 4" lower when filled with substrate. I still felt it was a bit high over a rock thing so hung a large hammock right up against the roof inside, and an egg box hammock further along over something else that wasn't a soft landing. They were intended to be there in case he climbed the bars to the roof and fell and not for him to climb into but he has found a way to climb into them from the small back shelf!

It isn't easy dealing with the height and I had three pine shelves already that I used instead of the one the cage comes with, plus a large labyrinth house on the right which makes another lower shelf.

I've looked at the Ritz again and it is a better height and also has narrow bar spacing. It does at least have a front door, if only a small one. A lot depends on how easy it would be to get your hamster out.

Even with the large front door on the Plaza I'm having problems getting our robo out (as he just runs away). So it might not make a lot of difference. It could be difficult getting your hand in the little door possibly to get him to go into a tube eg. Although might be possible to have a hand in the top and a hand in the front.

If you're diy minded you could maybe cut the bars on the Ritz and fix a bigger door from a second hand hamster heaven though.

One cage that's better than either of those really is the Savic Mickey 2XL which is 80 x 50. It has the low height, the narrow bar spacing and the big front door. Our last robo was in that and it's plenty big enough for a robo if you set it up well.

It doesn't seem to be available at the moment though but the hamster heaven is the same cage but with 1cm bar spacing which should be fine too. Without the tubes and penthouse installed. The height is much better for a dwarf hamster.

I would have used the Mickey 2XL but the rescue liked the idea of him being in a 100cm cage. So I used the plaza. but it was a fiddle to set up!
