Hamster cage suggestions please?
Hiya,
I'm new here, nice to 'meet' you all . I used to keep hamsters a few years ago but haven't had one in a while until yesterday, when I adopted a little unwanted female syrian from the RSPCA. What they didn't fully mention until I got there, was she had escaped from two cages - once whilst in the RSPCA's care😭 I was going to use my barney cage but it's got some slightly larger gaps from where the door has pulled it out of shape over time and it seems she can push herself through ridiculously small gaps somehow?? Anyway, queue rushing home and quickly setting up my marrakesh 100 cage, which fortunately I don't think she can escape😂. It's nice for her but was intended for some rescue robos I'm due to get shortly! So essentially, does anyone have any suggestions for a cage that will keep this one in so I can use the marrakesh for its intended purpose please?🤣 I'm in England, sadly zooplus don't seem to do any other their nice old cages here anymore like the Alexander or Barney. I'm not sure they would have worked for her anyway, absolute houdini she is! 😂 Any suggestions are welcomed but I don't have a huge budget sadly. Thank you so so much in advance from myself and Rosie (hamster 😄 ) Pic shows her almost immediately being crazy trying to climb the back of her wheel😂

Re: Hamster cage suggestions please?
Hello and welcome to HC!
She really is a cutie!
You could look for a second hand tank type cage like a Zoozone 2 100cmx50cm, a large pawhut if she's not a chewer or a large fishtank and then make a meshed lid.
There are some good bargains on Gumtree.
I have re-enforced a slack door of an Alaska with a metal playpen panel to keep an adventurous female Syrian in. It closed the gaps on the sides.
Off topic but if you intend to house more than one Robo in your Marrakesh then you need to have a second cage on standby. More likely than not they will fall out and fight. I'm only mentioning this now because you said Robos.

Re: Hamster cage suggestions please?
If she's a Syrian she shouldn't be able to get through 1cm bars! The important thing is a good fitting door that can't be opened easily. Cagewise I think the Savic Plaza is best. the bars are 1cm and the door fits really tightly closed and no gaps - and you could add clips to be sure. There is no top door on that cage (the barney had big gaps at the top didn't it?). It just has the one big front opening door. There are also no side gaps as it's sealed at the sides with strips.
And it's a good sized cage for a Syrian. It can be tricky to set up if using the enormous green shelf it comes with as that restricts where to put things, so I've never used it and put different shelves in instead, across one end.
When you mention she has escaped from cages though, has she actually chewed through a plastic base before?
Yes it's a pain zooplus is now defunct for cages basically, but thank goodness we have the savic plaza!

Re: Hamster cage suggestions please?
Thanks for suggestions! I actually had the Savic Plaza extremely briefly because it arrived broken. It felt fairly flimsy to me to be honest anyway, miss the good old zooplus days 🤣
She *has* escaped through 1cm bars would you believe - twice! No one knows how!
Thanks re the advice on the robos, I know I need a spare cage on hand, it's all in progress, thank you so much anyway tho they're so so tiny but I know they always have the potential to fight, I'll have the facilities to house them separately before I get them just in case don't worry they're still quite young I think, about 3 months, they've been housed together this whole time, what do you think the likelihood is of them falling out? It's something I'd researched a lot and there's a lot of conflicting info out there. It is 2 brothers so I'm told. Certainly concerns me, thanks for any info. Sorry ik off topic 😂
Anyways, going back to Rosie, I've been looking in to the detolf for her and making a mesh lid as there's an ikea near me. Seems like the best and most economical option to keep her safe! Thoughts please?

Re: Hamster cage suggestions please?
The likelihood of robos and all dwarf hamsters for that matter is essentially inevitable and even if they don't have an obvious falling out or cause serious injury to one another, the stress is still very harmful to them and they really do so much better being kept strictly alone - the sooner the better!
Did the cage with 1cm bars have any larger gaps in the corners for example? This can actually be a common design flaw with many cages actually. 1cm bars wouldn't allow a fully grown Syrian to escape, even the smaller ones, so I'd strongly lean towards something else leading to the escape instead. The standard 1/2 inch bar spacing used in the US for all hamster species is actually 1.27cm and many people have reliably & successfully kept even the tiniest robos in that.
ETA there are also other things that can compromise the security of a cage other than corner gaps, for example many cages have plastic tubing that can potentially get disconnected from the cage and lead to a very easy escape route. While this may not be the case for the OP it is still really good for hamster owners in general to keep in mind.

Congratulations, she is gorgeous.
For a female syrian you could also look into something like an IkEA komplement/linnmon cage
I mention them as although the detolf is longer it is narrower and not as high.
With you saying she has escaped a few times these might be better options due to the height of them

OK thanks I'll look at separating them. I was looking at the maxi duna multy as a reserve cage, the only issue being meshing the lid but doesn't look too hard
Honestly, I don't know the ins and outs of the cage she was in. I only know what the RSPCA have told me. Nobody knows how she got out but there was no holes in the base. She's an escape artists lol
