They were mini pliers that I had for jewellery making, but I think I have used the larger ones before too.
A pair of large tweezers might work too, anything that you can bend and squish the metal with

Thanks so much everyone for all your suggestions! Rosie the Syrian moved in to her detolf yesterday finally! it's not perfect and I'm going to get some vine wood and stuff to fill it up a bit more as well as a sand bath asap but honestly she loves it in there. I thought she would find it super stressful (despite the fact that I put her old bedding in there), but she just wanted to explore right away and made loads of burrows within about half an hour she was right at home straight away
The only issue is she keeps burying her wheel and I have to keep digging it back out
Going to need to rearrange to try and prevent that but not too sure how
On the whole though, it's great to see her so happy!
Also should be getting my rescue robo in the next week who is going to be living in the marrakesh 100 Rosie was in so it's all quite exciting
Have attached a pic of her detolf and also a pic of her in her old enclosure right before I moved her because she looks adorable, such a poser

Aww, Rose is super cute! She may like to have her wheel on a platform. I have noticed hamsters seem to dig under their wheel unless it is on one.

Rosie is such a cutie. The wheel issue is easily sorted. Get a baking tin to fit the width of the detolf and fill it with sand then place the wheel into it. I'd relocate the tin and wheel to the shallow end of the detolf and possibly use a substrate devider to stop the substrate from falling into the sand.

Also I need to seal the edges of my marrakesh 100 because however much bedding I use wet still gets inside the tiny little gaps! Would this be safe, as it says safe for fish? Also would you allow a 24hr cure time or longer? Thankyou

Aquarium silicon and any silicon for that matter MUST be allowed to cure outside well away from hamsters and other animals including humans for a bare minimum of 48 hours. It produces toxic fumes while curing which you absolutely need to keep pets well away from, but once fully cured silicon does not produce fumes.

OK forget that then, thank you very much for advising!
I read somewhere about putting a hemp mat at the bottom instead for absorbency (obviously under loads of normal bedding I mean), would that likely work or would one think that is a bad idea? Thankyou

I use a hemp mat in my marrakesh

Re the sealant, anything like that I leave for several days as it can still produce fumes, which we might not necessarily smell, but can still be over powering for our little ones.
