Like I said before, he will be getting a lid when we get the materials, hence why I asked Otto what mesh they used to begin with. Pico's cage is coming together, with the Detolf and stand already made, so both lids will be made soon enough.

He will not be going into any type of temporary cage. He is a big hamster, I'm out of a job, and wouldn't be able to get any of his stuff into a smaller cage. If I was to put him in a smaller cage, there would be much higher risk of him chewing his way out, developing bar biting behaviours, become a more aggressive hamster overall. It's not worth it, in my opinion.

I really appreciate your concern, and perhaps he will escape the enclosure within the next couple days, despite having never escaped before.

Heidii I'm sure you are doing your best. To save further anxst about your choices this thread is closed. Please feel free to post new pics of your cage when it is complete.
I did have to make a makeshift lid for a tank once and I just used some wire mesh bent over and weighted down with some books! It worked well and I could feel safe knowing he couldn't get out or more importantly a cat or something couldn't get in!
Maybe try posting on a local gifting page and ask if anyone has any mesh or wood to gift? I've had loads of things given that way which is great. I also gift things myself so it works well.
