Default Silent Runner

I have the 9 inch silent spinner and I think it seems great. I then bought the 12 inch which arrived today and the quality does not seem as good. The plastic that joins the circular bit of the wheel has a gap as it is of the same size as the 9 inch. Is this normal? I feel a hamster could get their paw or nail caught in the gap.

The gap is a definite safety hazard unfortunately, though not one widely discussed or acknowledged in the hamster community. It's a lot more commonly known with other pets(hedgehogs, sugar gliders, etc) and sadly has lead to severe injury for quite a few small pets due to that design flaw. Apparently the silent spinners also used to be made much better in terms of actually spinning and staying silent, but now they just can't seem to stay silent and you're lucky to find one that even spins let alone stays able to spin!

The Silent Runner is a much better quality wheel(and a lot safer) and would be the best possible choice, though others might be able to help you with finding decent solid wheels in the UK if that isn't an option.

Thank you so much for this detailed reply. I was actually shocked by the huge gap and poor quality of the 12 inch. I am going to try and return it.

I think that you are talking about the Silent Runner not the Silent Spinner. Is the 9in wheel yellow and the 12in wheel orange? If yes, it's the Silent Runner which is a different make and wheel from the Silent Spinner.

Oops. Sorry. Yes, I do mean the silent runner. I have edited the title now.

Are you sure that you pressed the back and front firmly together all the way round? The gap on each side of the connector should be tiny and not cause a hazard.

The wheel Amity is referring to is the Spinner which has gaps because the running surface of the small Spinner is made from two parts. I put car stickers on the gaps when i had a dwarf who loved her Spinner.

Well perhaps I need to try again then. It is the 12 inch that seems to have a big gap. I know understand I got confused with the Spinner. I feel stupid but I cannot seem to delete this post. Thank you very much for your help.

A lot of people get those wheels mixed up because the names are too alike.

The gap is tiny once pressed into place.

Thank you. It looks the same as my gap. I uploaded a picture. I thought a nail could get caught in the gap.
