Default Safe wood?

Hi all,

I am thinking about making something out of wood for my hamster. Maple and alder are a few of my options, but I'm not sure if they are okay for a hamster to have in their cage. I have found different information on different websites, so I just wanted to get the information from here.

Thanks!

I looked on a degu Facebook group (degu groups are good sources of information on woods as degus gnaw so much) and found that alder is unsafe as it has cytotoxic effects. I also found that maple is considered unsafe but couldn't find the reason.

Woods that are safe to use for toys include kiln-dried pine, spruce, birch, basswood, poplar, apple, pear and hazel.
