Default Heureka Marathon Rodipet Wheel

Hi guys, sorry I'm a bit quiet these days guys but my health is not great, so cutting back on lots of things at the moment.

Anyhow, I just thought I would bring your attention to another wheel which I now recommend. It's the Heureka Marathon wheel from Rodipet. I got it in the november sale so I got 20% off, but it's normally around 30 Euros. I'm not sure how long it has been on the market, but think it is relative new.

I have done a video on it, overall I'm really impressed and happy with it. The only hamsters I probably wouldn't recommend it for are big chunky or long syrian hamsters. If you watch the video you will see why I say this.

Thank you so much for this video and review, Luna.

I was thinking of getting one for Rodney but now that i have seen it in action, won't.

What bothers me is the running position. The hamster doesn't run straight and level like in the 12in Silent Runner Jack has but downwards with the nose pointing outwards. Rodney only weighs 150g but he is a long hamster so a sloped wheel wouldn't work for him.

I was really curious about this wheel because i'm trying to figure out the advantage of this design.

Not sure if Vorsprung durch Technik applies in this instance.

yes, Twinkle weighed about the same as Moonbeam but he was a long hamster, no way would I have used this wheel with him.

I think it would be good for dwarf hamsters. (I know someone on IG is using it with one of her dwarf hamsters) Not sure if robos could push it around though.

It does look good setup at an angle in Moonbeams cage though, but why it tapers like that I don't know, I did wonder if it was something to do with the impact on the ball bearings. I think that's how this wheel works.

Yes thanks for reviewing the wheel Luna - I’ve seen a couple of people on here have bought them recently. I haven’t had chance to watch the full video yet and had no sound so haven’t seen/heard all of it, but it’s clear it is wider at the front than at the back. Maybe that doesn’t matter as hamsters tend to run nearer the front and centrifugal force would probably help with that. But it does seem to make it more of a 10” wheel in a way. I have one of the 10” bucket wheels which Pickle used to really love in his playpen. At 10” it technically wasn’t big enough for a large chunky hamster but he ran in it well.

I am also not sure of the purpose of it leaving backwards. Other than to stop them flying out of the wheel maybe. Seems to have pros and cons. Pros being - easy to wipe clean (more so than other silent wheels), sturdy, made in Germany. Cons being - it takes up quite a bit of space in a cage and perhaps doesn’t need to be at that angle! Reinventing the wheel?!

My mistake - it says the smaller inner part is 12”! Some reviews here (translated.

I'm surprised how quiet the wheel is.
Another wheel we had before made a soft sound of the wind.
It makes no sound at all.
And our gold hamster also fits in it!

Hooray I can sleep peacefully again. Rad is very quiet and stable due to the heavy bottom. Takes up a lot of space but it's worth it!!!

Sturdy and heavy running wheel, good construction and noiseless. Very large and the hamster has a good grip on the wheel. The hamster does not step next to the wheel so quickly, because the wheel leans back. Very big recommendation!

Our Teddy hamster is clearly very
very happy with it, those mini holes ensure that she has more grip, it takes some getting used to but then she went all out. Beautiful straight back. (So funny too, the faster she runs the flatter she got haha)
I had to change the whole scape because it turned out to be bigger than I had estimated but everything looks great now.
While scaping I left her in the enclosure with the running wheel to get used to it and she didn't pay attention to me anymore so I could do my thing for her. She even fell asleep next to it like a ball.
The running wheel itself makes no noise and it is really sturdy, stable solid stuff.

Very nice running wheel, very sturdy and runs very smoothly and quietly. My golden hamster walks well in it and loves it. Price-quality ratio is very good.

Nice and sturdy wheel. It turns very smoothly and my gerbils walk with a straight back. In addition, the wheel is very quiet. Really recommended.

Rodipet states that the design makes the wheel rollover proof. Never seen a hamster doing somersaults in a wheel.

Ah maybe that means it can’t topple over in the cage (although with flaky substrate under I think any wheel could topple over. Unless it is hamster rollover (which robos do - not somersaults but going so fast they spin right round with the wheel).

Handy if one size wheel fits all hamsters though. I’m surprised they haven’t done a 9 or 10” version though.

Luna why do you think it isn’t good for long or chunky hamsters please?

Based on the video my understanding is that this is definitely not a 30 cm let alone 12 inch(30.48 cm) wheel internally. It's only about 24 cm/just shy of 9.5 inches which is way too small for many Syrian hamsters unfortunately.

The size would be excellent for a dwarf hamster of any species in theory, but if they also ran at an angle instead of straight and in a completely natural position I wouldn't consider it a suitable wheel choice.

It's really unfortunate that the design is so angled. It really does have some great features in terms of aesthetic and quality from what I can see(along with being made in Germany), but I would always be really hesitant to recommend angled wheels of any kind knowing how important a proper running surface that allows a straight & natural running position is.

Serendipity, because it tapers towards the back - so 30cm at front - that's good- only 24cm at the back - not good for long or chunky syrians.
Amityville, the wheel is angled, but it is angled so it still has a flat running surface at the bottom if that makes sense.
Ria/Serendipity that wheel is not moving anywhere, as long as on a flat surface. I've found robos only do somersaults if the wheel is not the right size for them, go bigger and it will stop happening.

I actually like how it fits in the cage, I should maybe do a comparison video the silent runner v heureka at some point.
Think I answered everything.

Thanks Luna. 24cm at the back isn’t bad. It’s about 10” and 10” wheels are fine for all but the largest hamsters (hence the Carolina storm wheels being so popular). The hamster is going to be running further forward than the very back so it’ll be between 10” and 11” I guess. Can’t quite imagine it without seeing it but Rodipet are quite fussy about what wheels they sell. It’s good to have wheel choices since the wodent wheels went. I like the fact that it doesn’t have a lip at the front. When hamsters are older they can get injured tripping over a lip on the wheel.

Shame we can’t get the hamsters to tell us which wheel they prefer running on if given a choice!
