I’m not the best to comment but I struggled for a cage for a while. Depending on what you have already a bin cage may end up costing the same as a normal cage, just because the mesh wiring and need of a drill for ventilation.

I ended up getting an Alaska cage for £20 on FB marketplace, I could still get a bigger one eventually if one came about and best part is I’d definitely get my money back for it. I know money isn’t the most important factor but I’m also saying it because cages and vivariums seem to sell easier than bin cages. Also as you said the dimensions sometimes aren’t from the base.

Obviously it’s up to you but I was cautious of costs and wanted the best size I just wanted to point that out if you felt the same.

Fortunately or unfortunately I’m a bit of a DIY person. When I made Mr Mouse’s tank, I bought a massive sheet of mesh but then my step dad gave me some so the mesh has lived behind the sofa since then (still packaged!). I also have a dremel with lots of attachments which I bought to make mouse and rat toys.
I completely understand what you’re saying though! I’ve bought Guinea pig and rabbit and rat cages and they’re all really resellable! I wouldn’t mind buying a cage but I think I have a vision in my head of what I want the set up to look like if that makes sense? For example, I’m already growing some stuff that I can dry for foraging.

The best bin for a bin cage is the really useful box 145 litre - about 80 x 60 cm - has good depth and easy to cut. The minimum floor measurements are ok but you wouldn’t want to go any smaller for a Syrian. My preference for Syrians is a large front door - good for interaction and taming - rather than tank style with top access. So I prefer cages like the Savic hamster plaza - 100 x 50 cm. that is ideal for a Syrian and has a big front opening door.

There is a Pawhut cage you can adjust to have a front opening door (the angular shaped one) by reversing the door and front panel when you build it, do the door is at the top instead of the bottom and allows for more/deep substrate too. However the danger with wood cages is some Syrians will just chew their way out.

If you like the idea of diy though, have a look at the Linmon cage tutorial on YouTube. That is melamine so can’t be chewed out if - but the cost will be higher than just buying a Savic plaza! I prefer to spend more on good cage contents like a large labyrinth house and a silent runner wheel . (Which can be attached to bars wherever you want it).

Not sure if the Savic plaza is in stock again though.

Yes it’s in stock

These are the cage contents I was talking about. Setting up a cage can be interesting diy as well. Making and glueing on legs for a large house so it’s supported and tying rat tubes to bars for access runs ;
(I use cable ties or sisal string).

Well I have finally got my set up. It is…. Drumroll please!….. an alaska!

After all that I went on Marketplace and found one! I’m also on the waiting list for a hamster who’s colour I have fallen completely in love with!

So I’m a happy (if slightly depressed by the wait) chappy!

Wonderful! All our Syrians happily live in Alaskas.

I'm curious now. What is the colour of the hamster?
