Default Re: Natural Hamster "Eco" Cage

Ah, I forgot to mention in my previous post that I wasn't necessarially looking to create some kind of swampy reptile/amphibian terrarium for my hams. I think bioactive was the wrong choice of words in my OP! But hopefully I think I've been able to illustrate kinda what I'm going for. At this point, taking the many words of caution, I think I'll move ahead and implement my plans but rather have it as a natural play pen instead of a permanent home.

I should also mention that my wife also lambasted me for the idea She essentially brought up the same points as everyone else here; guess I'm too much of a naturalist for my (and hammies) own good haha. Just want to provide him some way to really scratch those natural urges and dig and dig to his heart's content.

Unfortunately clay in and of itself even mixed with other things is a very strict no for our pet hamsters. It can cause serious digestive blockages unfortunately. Stick with coconut fiber even outside the cage - it all has to be safe and fully digestible if they're going to interact with it!

You could definitely have a much larger amount of coconut fiber outside the cage compared to what you can safely have within the cage. It still isn't soil or remotely bioactive, but it is a really fun and safe source of enrichment if used properly.

Regardless of where you place it though, soil is never going to be a safe option for pet hamsters. Stick with pure coconut fiber. I understand wanting a naturalistic setup, but sometimes natural can be far less safe than the man made things sadly. Coconut fiber is still natural and is generally very sustainable though!
