Default Best value bedding

I am super happy to finally say I have an Alaska cage which I love compared to the slightly small pets at home one I was using when I got Mitzi quite suddenly. I finally decided on this as I wanted 100x50cm but recently got a bird cage because our dove wakes me up by pecking my face every morning, so that now takes up a lot of room but allows me sleep.

I also was using paper teabag bedding, just like shredded paper it looked like which I know is safe but I hated how it didn’t really compact and would regularly need cleaning.

So I was trying to decide between carefresh and Fitch bedding and I only wanted something for around £10 really and I think Fitch has better reviews but the cheapest I could find was a massive amount for £20.

Then I found Katey clean and cosy bedding 24l for £10.50 so I got that with high hopes. I’m super disappointed though, I prefer it to the paper bedding I was using but it only half filled the cage! Also it still seems very papery and I’m wondering how good at odour control it actually is.

Does anyone else use this bedding and recommend it? In which case I’ll just have to purchase another bag, or should I start fresh again and get something like Fitch? Stuck for what to do now as I only wanted to spend £10 and now it’s probably going to be a costly mistake.

Fitch may cost you more initially to buy in bulk but I think it goes further.
I know one bag will give approx 5 to 6 inches of cover in the medium eco habitat which is approx 100 x 60 cm (i think) if you allow for all the items I have in the cage. I normally use about 2 - 2.5 bags in my cages I think.

Is that for a £20 bag? Also is it any different to the one I have in terms of are their odour control similar and texture? Just because if it is then I guess I could top mine up with Fitch rather than replace all the bedding again

There’s really no need to remove the clean n cosy - it’s perfectly fine to mix bedding types. Right now I have a mix of the Keytee and CareFresh, and my hamster is perfectly happy.

The 24l bag of Kaytee clean and cozy works out expensive at £10.50 because you'd need 2 bags to fill an Alaska.
I only ever buy the 85l bags for £22.99 but don't how much they are online with delivery.

Apparently, Fitch is similar to Kaytee and you can mix paper substrates anyway so no need to take it out if you decide to use something else.

Why are you concerned about odour control? That's just another sales gimmick i think. If something starts to stink then spot clean it, simple as that.

I'd get another bag of Kaytee to fill Mitzi's Alaska for now and then shop around for better deals.

Yeah, I’m not very good at picturing litres with cages and they have the 12l bag and I was actually considering the 6l one! Since it expands 3x

I just know how much paper absorbs and since it is still paper I don’t understand how it can be good odour control. Like you say I do just take it out when it’s dirty just I try to leave her home undisturbed so it would be nice to know that if she’s weed or something where I can’t see it won’t upset her until I find it.

It’s good to know they’re all essentially the same so can mix them. It does seem like it would be really nice for her and soft dust free etc. Just wish they’d make clearer how much you’d need.

Guess this Christmas present to myself this year is bedding 😂 Mitzi seems happier though and she’s worth it ❤️

That’s crazy 85l for £22.99! I think for 45l on Amazon it’s £25

Try Porton Aquatics. They deliver but i don't know what they charge because i can drive there.

The bigger the bag the cheaper it works out. I bought a 85l bag on Amazon for £24.99 before but Amazon has become too expensive for my liking.

I needed Trixie corner shelves recently and got two incl postage from package pets for the same amount Amazon would have charged me for one.

I’ve just had a look the prices are amazing but delivery is £6, but I am looking for Christmas bits for my pets at the moment so it could still be cheaper to buy from there, thank you for the great suggestion!

I was looking for that shelf recently also, it was unavailable on Amazon but said would be £3.50 so I saved it, when it came back in stock it was £9! They do overcharge for hamster things when it’s just wood with some screws, if I could make a lot of it myself I would but I wouldn’t be safe with a drill 😂
