Default Which size Rodipet Maze?

Hi everyone

I know you guys are really knowledgable about Hamster Heavens and also Rodipet houses so I just wondered which size would be best.

Layla is a winter white hybrid and it quite small. She lives in a HH and has a Ferplast Sin house at the moment but I thought I might change that to a Rodipet house so she has more rooms. There is a 31x20 - 6 rooms that is says are good for robo's and a 31x28 which is 8 rooms for dwarfs but that seems like a lot of rooms.

I know people have bought these before, which do you think would be best size wise?

Hi there. Yes I see the point there. I have the smaller one for robos in a hamster heaven sized cage. I think the rooms are a bit too small for a Russian dwarf. The one for Russian dwarfs, as you say, does seem to have too many small compartments and the house itself is slightly larger (same width but deeper). However it is deeper because the main rooms are slightly larger - more Russian dwarf sized. The little compartments and various accesses look fun though. One of the rear small compartments is underneath the top exit hole - to stop light coming in. The other small ones may or may not be used. They are intended for hoards I think. But I think that house would be better for a Russian dwarf than the Robo sized one.

But I agree the layout is maybe not quite right. In that the back main compartment has a number of doors so a toilet tray would block one or more of the entrances. The layout of the Robo one is better (same layout as the Syrian sized one which I’ve also used). Having said that I think your hamster would enjoy it Lots of places to go.

There are other layout options from Getzoo though. This is one cypher on here has used for a Russian dwarf before, in a Hamster Heaven. It has one main larger room, two “runs”, a ladder to the top entrance, and a smaller compartment off the main room under the ladder. That layout would mean the litter tray and nest in the same larger room which would work fine. But still achieves absolute darkness inside by way of the double entrance (light doesn’t go round corners).

The site is only in German so you may need to use Google translate .

Getzoo Wohnlabyrinth Xena | Hauser | Einrichtung & Zubehor | Getzoo.de

There is also another one on the getzoo site which is smaller but the layout isn’t good as the main room has two exits and becomes a passageway. It is the same layout as the Trixie Leif Labyrinth house. There has been much discussion on here before about ideal layouts. The getzoo one linked seems to work best. However their houses are like the sin houses - they slot together like a jigsaw - which is fine but they still need supporting underneath in case tunnelled under and I’m not sure getzoo sell “legs” for their labyrinth house - so it would mean glueing dowels to the house so it doesn’t sink and squash the hamster if tunnelled under.

Whereas Rodipet sell legs/stilts to fit their labyrinth houses and support them. Although I usually end up chopping bits off those legs anyway or the house sits above the substrate level! Even when the cage has substrate to the brim.

Thank you so much for your detailed response, lots of information I hadn't even thought about.

I did see on another post that someone had removed some of the Rodipet walls but that seems a bit of a shame considering the cost. I did see a Getzoo one on Amazon which I didn't even realise they sold but it doesn't have many rooms -

Hi I have both a 6 chamber and 3 chamber rodipet house for syrians. I found with the 6 chamber, 2 chambers never got used and got blocked off. I'm loving the 3 chamber one, room for sleeping, toilet and food area. I just wondered if a 3 chamber one would work for you and your hamster?

Yes that’s the other getzoo one I mentioned. It’s ok, but the main room has an entrance/exit on both walls - one to get into the main room from the front door/passageway- and one leaving the main room to access the ladder. Just makes it tricky to fit a toile corner in and a nest as well - without blocking one of the doors. However it’s ok and dwarf hansters don’t need big litter trays. I think the other getzoo one is better.

I also think it’s the labyrinth aspect they like because it’s dark inside- not necessarily the rooms. But they like the Rodipet ones with rooms too.

It’s true they don’t always use all the rooms but one side is just for access snd I think they still go there and like the darkness - even if they only nest, hoard and pee in two or three of them. Badically one side of it is like a passageway for the top entrance.

Glad to hear the three room house works well. Is that for a Syrian or a dwarf? In terms of size it’s about the same size as the dwarf labyrinth houses. I just love the labyrinth houses because the hamsters do. But yes the three room house could be an option.

Size wise, I wish Rodipet did a dwarf one but the size of the robo one but with less rooms, I hope that makes sense. I just don't it to take over her cage as the Ferplast Sin is around 26x17 and has her flying saucer wheel on the top.

Soooo, I have just got an email from Rodipet and they have a 20% discount off everything on the 31st and the 1st, this could be dangerous.

It certainly could be dangerous! Yes it’s annoying they don’t have something in between those two dwarf maze houses. The Getzoo one you looked at is the same size as the Rodipet Robo one I think. The other getzoo one is the same size as the Rodipet 8 room dwarf maze house - but with the one larger room and a small room under the ladder. I know what you mean about not wanting a house to take over the cage. However cypher had that getzoo one in a hamster heaven and it seemed fine (the larger of the two with the better layout. What I find also is the roof is like added floorspace anyway. I put hemp mat on the roof.

I think the Robo Rodipet house would probably be ok actually. It’s 20 cm deep - about 8”. So the larger compartments are probably at least 5” long. The dwarf 8 room one is 28 cm deep. So an extra 8cm of depth which is about 3.5 to 4” deeper and an extra small compartment. So the larger compartments aren’t going to be much bigger. If you felt the larger compartments weren’t quite big enough in the Robo one you could saw out one of the dividers.

I have done that before. It does need sawing though - had to get OH to do mine. And then just a light sand where you’ve taken the bit out. I do prefer the Rodipet ones to the getzoo ones personally. They are well made and hamsters naturally seem to use one larger room for nesting and one room as a toilet - hence it’s good to put a toilet tray in with sand in and out last Robo used his as well. They usually choose the adjoining large compartment at the back as a toilet and nest in one of the front larger compartments.

Thanks again for your detailed answer and I ended up going for the Robo Rodipet house in the end and I did buy a little toilet tray which I hadn't thought of before. I thought I would let Layla play in it when she is free roaming and see what it is like size wise. I rescued two robo's over the course of the last 2 weeks so if it is too small for her I will put it in with one of the other tiny ones. I did go a bit mental on my order and noticed they have also started selling an orange sand bath rather than the huge digging boxes so I am really looking forward to seeing what this is like for Jude who is a Syrian:

Rodipet® Hamster Sand Bath

Jude has a trixie labyrinth house which I did remove one wall but couldn't get the floor of it out. I did waterproof it but I noticed when I cleaned it last night he is starting to keep food and wee in the same room which gets really smelly. I wish I had ordered a Syrian house now too.
