Question Bin cage square inches?

Hi, I want to upgrade my ham to a bigger bin, and this is the largest clear one I can find. How many square inches is it? The reviews say its around 600 but I want bigger (preferably around 800) The bin gets narrower as it gets to the bottom so I plan to fill it with a ton of bedding to maximize the floor space.

Height 17.9 "
Length 39.8"
Width 21.5"

Hi and welcome to HC!

39.8 x 21.5 = 855.7

Not sure how they work out 600 which would be 30" x 20".

If those dimensions are the ones towards the top they won't give you an accurate size unfortunately. To get an accurate representation of the floor space you should measure around the bottom of the sides instead of relying on listed dimensions etc.

Is it for a Syrian or a dwarf hamster? The size is good - I can’t think in inches and square inches, more proportions - but 40” is about 100cm I think which is a good length. 20 inches is 50 cm so another 1.5” means it’s about 53cm deep which is also a good size - even though those are maximum sizes at the top. Height is about 45cm so will for a 12” wheel easily.

For a dwarf hamster it’s good. For a Syrian the depth (53cm but maybe more like 40cm lower down) isn’t as deep as ideally. But it’s a good length and if set up carefully it could be a good cage

Thanks for the input! I think they measured the inside of the bin or something to get 600, which isn’t as big as I’d like. Any suggestions for cages (in Canada)? I’ve been having trouble finding a large cage since my room is pretty small so I have my current 570 square inch cage sitting on my bookshelf. I want a detolf but it’s too big :/ Also, it’s for a dwarf

I think it would make a great cage for a dwarf! Very hard to find cages anywhere these days with supply drying up. I believe most people in the US and Canada find bin cages or tanks are the main option.

As you mentioned the Detolf but you don't have room, have you checked out the ikea komplement or Patsa? They are not as long, but wider and higher, depends on how much DIY you want to do, although they are min diy.

Yes, I’d use an aquarium but the ones that are big enough are always too long and almost all the bins I find are too small for my liking :/ The platsa seems promising. How many square inches of floor space does it have? Also how would I go about converting it into a hamster cage? I’m willing to DIY but I don’t have any tools lol

Red face Re: Bin cage square inches?

The bin cage pictured in your thread would be fine for a dwarf hamster. You are aware that it tapers and want to increase the floor space by adding deep substrate.

What i wonder about is how you would convert a plastic box into a hamster home without tools.
Sufficient ventilation is very important with a bin cage because it can get very hot inside plastic.

I have made many bin cages, cut out and meshed the lid, a front window and a back vent to ensure enough airflow.

I'm lucky to have the right tool to cut the plastic, smooth the edges, cut the wire mesh to size and drill the holes to attach the mesh with cableties then cut the surplus ends of the ties.

A cheap and easy IKEA hamster cage tutorial (no tools!) - YouTube

If you look on her youtube channel she has videos for rhe platsa and komplement, if i remember rightly one was with no tools and one was just with a saw. ( dont quote me on that though)

She has since built the next size platsa up as the one in her video was only temporary (on the small size)
So i am not sure off floorspace
Someone on Instagram made the 60 x 55 x120 which gives 1116 sq inches
