Ideal bedding mix
I’ve been slowly replacing my ham’s bedding in the hope of creating something a bit more stable when he burrows, but it’s not really working.
I mixed Carefresh paper bedding, aspen shavings and a little bit of hay. I’d guess the proportions are about 65% paper, 30% aspen and 5% hay.
Any ideas on a mix that’s more stable? I have lots of Carefresh (it was on offer) so I want to use that up.

Re: Ideal bedding mix
I like some hemp on the bottom of the cage then I fill the rest with a paper substrate like fitch. They seem to tunnel just fine in that on its own.

Re: Ideal bedding mix
Agree - Fitch on its own holds tunnels well. But if you have lots of care fresh then you’ll want to use it up. Maybe you could get some Fitch and mix it in with it. I read about hay, aspen and care fresh mix being good for tunnels but never found the mix of substrates to help really and like flower fairy found Fitch on its own did the job.
