Thanks! I’d like to use the 60x55x120 platsa. Could I use it as is without any DIY or lid? I’m planning to fill it with a foot of bedding, which would leave 8 or 9 inches left, and I don’t think a dwarf could get over that.

I just realized I was browsing the American Ikea website and the platsa and komplement aren’t actually available in Canada :/ I went on the Canadian website and the smallest frame they had was 6 feet long Maybe I could wait until Christmas and get a Christmas tree bin?

I think the first bin you listed is fine for a dwarf hammy! I think they always need a meshed lid - you'd be surprised how hamsters can get out! All the need to do is pile all the substrate up in one area and walk up it! Using the top of the wheel as a leg up.

I must have missed the bit about no lid/meshing. Most people cut panels in two sides for meshign and the top. Ventilation is important. The other risk with an open top is something could fall in and cause injury.

I had to learn the hard way that hamsters will always try to escape and often succeed without a secure and escape proof lid. They'll create their own way out with anything inside the cage or pile substrate up as well to escape!

I didn’t think that they were smart enough to do that! My past hamsters were in the bin without a lid with no escapes. How could I make a lid without tools? Would cutting the top of the lid using a hot knife and taping mesh on it work?

A hot knife should work, but make sure to do any sort of cutting, melting, etc outside due to fumes and such. You could probably poke holes through with the same hot knife(or potentially a wood burning knife if you can get one) for zip ties and secure the mesh with those which would be a lot sturdier than tape. You can still add tape on the outside to the edges of the mesh(as the mesh should be added from the outside since the edges can be rough) to make it safer & easier to handle the lid.

There are larger ones than that. My daughter found a big one and Blaze loves it. I also built one out of a big three drawer storage container. With a little infinity my Tink Tink loves it.
