Default Hamster Heaven or Ferplast Maxi Duna

Hi everyone

Unfortunately I have a Maxi Duna spare as my little robo Winnie has just passed away. I have another hamster Layla who is a winter white and currently in a HH. She spend most of her time on her wheels (Silent Runner and flying saucer) even though she has lots to keep her entertained. She does very little burrowing and just sleeps in one place which is her wooden house. The cage is on the floor and she comes out most mornings for some free roaming. I like the idea there is a front door and when she's had enough she gets back in herself. So my question is, what do you guys think about moving her into the Maxi? I know it doesn't have the front door option but it has much more floor space. I'm just not sure what to do for the best.

I'm very sorry to hear of Winnie's passing.

All our dwarfs incl the Robo live in Hamster Heavens. You could increase the substrate depth by attaching cardboard or boredom breaker mats to stop it from spilling out.

Do you think a larger cage would encourage Layla to burrow and that it would enrich her life?
Is that the reason you are thinking of moving her or is it because a lot of people say the bigger a cage the better? A view i personally don't agree with.

Our dwarf Betsy sounds very similar to Layla. She spends a lot of time on her wheels, Silent Runner and flying saucer, she sleeps in her wooden house or ceramic hide and hasn't shown much interest in burrowing. She likes her enclosed sandbath and climbs out of her HH when she wants to free roam but doesn't stay out for long.
She seems happy and for that reason i've never considered moving her into a bigger cage.

Personally I would leave her in the Hamster Heaven. The large front door shouldn’t be under estimated! And if she is happy and settled in there. It would also be a big change from a barred cage with front access to a solid sided cage with top access. An upgrade can be a positive thing sometimes but maybe it’s more a case of if it ain’t broke don’t fix it and the HH has plenty of floorspace for a dwarf hammy.

With an empty maxi duna you may be tempted to look at filling it with another hammy

Ahhh Betsy and Layla do sound very alike ❤️.

Yes, I was thinking bigger was better and just give her more room to play. She does have a cork log, a wicker tube and a large sand bath but it’s just the wheels she’s ever interested in or food.

I just don’t want to upset her moving her if she hates it.

I’m going to leave her where she is and thank you for your thoughts it has made me feel better.

I have been rescuing hammies when I have a spare cage for a couple of years now but I think I’ll sell the maxi as I get so heart broken every time they pass away. I stillbhave tiny Layla and Jude whose a Syrian to keep me company.

I know that feeling. So sorry for your loss. I sometimes find if you put the cage away somewhere for a while, it feels different in the future. When our first hamster Charlie died I didn't think I could use his Barney cage again. But once cleaned and out of sight for a while it felt ok setting it up for a new hammy a few months later - although I did do a completely different style of set up. Once the hamster is in it, it becomes theirs x

Yes but think of the happy life you gave them, something they wouldn't have had without you.

I think that once your grief has eased a little, you will think of all the unwanted hamsters out there waiting for someone like you to give them some kindness and care.

I wouldn't be hasty and sell the Duna just yet. Another sad little face may catch your heart.
