Smile Pipsqueaks new cage!

(btw if you're wondering why i'm calling pipsqueak 'her' its bcos the pet shop sexed her wrong, yes they mis-sexed both of my syrians)

Pipsqueak got a new cage and wheel!

https://media.discordapp.net/attachm...270&height=953

it's a savic hamster heaven and an 11' inch rolly wheel!

since she's quite a big hamster i decided not to go with the tube configuration on the box and instead make it shorter bcos i thought it might be uncomfortable to climb through so many tubes :) i also didn't add the levels since they take up space

if you're wondering why she's got so little bedding it's because i way underestimated how much bedding the hamster heaven needs and only bought 2 ten liter bags, face palm .-. but im gonna get her more bedding next week when i can afford it!

Lucky Pipsqueak! The Hamster Heaven is a great cage. There are quite a few Hamster Heaven set ups pictured on the "Let's see your cages" thread on the Forum under Housing.
Is she a fully grown Syrian or still a baby?
Like you, i remove the tubes and shelves to free up space. I also remove the penthouse to free up the top door. Comes in handy when putting up hanging toys but i keep away from chains, open ladders or anything a hamster could get tangled up in.
I'd add a big house with a bendy bridge over the door. Hamsters like a big bottomless house to build a nest and keep a hoard in. A shoebox house with the lid as the roof and the bottom and a big enough door cut out works well.

Has she settled into her new home yet?

Hi, she's definitely fully grown, im not sure of her exact age because i always forget to ask but when i got her from jollyes she was already very large and was alone (got her 16th july)

i kept the penthouse as my male syrian bagel is in a hamster heaven that i've had lots of hamsters in and they've all liked the penthouse a lot so i kept it :)

she does enjoy burrowing but when it comes to sleeping her fav has always been the ferplast hide (isn't in the pic coz she was in it in her old cage when i took the pic)

about the hanging toy, i've had one in the past (it's wrecked now after a couple of hamsters tho lol) and i've never had a bad experience with it but i'll keep an eye on it and if there are any problems i'll remove it :)

edit: i forgot to put this but she's not quite settled yet, she been bar biting a bit but that's to be expected with the stress of a new cage

I think she is lucky to have a new cage. And yes she may be a bit stressed but I wonder if more overhead cover would help so she doesn't feel exposed. They usually look for a nice dark cosy corner to nest in when in a new cage and then hide away a bit, so if she's bar biting she maybe doesn't feel very secure. Either under a shelf or in a good sized house.

I would add a shoe box house at floor level and she'll probably move into it.

You could have one of the shelves in it. The solid one that comes with the cage isn't too bad if you take the pod house off it - or they try and nest in that and it's too small! They do like a shelf to sit under and climb onto.

My only concern was the vertical tube up to the penthouse as hamsters aren't always great with vertical tubes. Easy access to things helps them settle as well.

Personally I would remove the penthouse and tube, add the solid shelf and a shoe box house (or a good sized house big enough to build a large nest in. And make sure there is plenty of nesting material - torn up strips of toilet paper. She might settle a bit easier then and feel more secure. the sputniks that come with the cage are popular with them too - if its hung over a shelf (otherwise its too high to get to).

If she's quite a large syrian she might find some of the little houses too small. Although they're good as extra hidey places. For a shoebox house you just cut the base out of a shoe box and cut a hole for a door - ideally on one of the long sides near one end. At least 6cm diameter. So it's open underneath and sat on the substrate (they like to burrow down and bury hoards under the nest and it also helps it keep aired). the lid is then a lift off roof so you can check inside without having to take the house out and the nest fall apart. Although I wouldn't take the top off for a while or she may abandon it.

I think she maybe just needs a bit more shelter and overhead cover. As mentioned above too the hanging toy could be slightly risky if it's hung by a chain. Hamsters can get legs caught in chains and end up hanging by a broken leg. Maybe the chain could be replaced with sisal string (which is safe to chew)?

Not meaning to sound critical Just trying to make suggestions so she settles in well. If they nest in the penthouse it can end up stinky and messy and need cleaning out more often, as has a solid floor - and that stresses them too.

If they have a house at substrate level they can have more normal behaviours, bury hoards under their nest (that stay clean and dry) so less cleaning needed, and will use a litter tray if everything at floor level.

Cage moves can really stress them unless you move over the old bedding and cage items in a similar layout and don't clean anything first. So if that wasn't the case, maybe adding some of her old bedding now would help her settle.

okay little update on pipsqueak,

she's definitely liking her new cage and wheel, and i added in the pink level just to add a little extra something, although i probably wont add the green level since it just takes up so much space

here's a cute pic i got of her chewing on her loofa chew :)

Aww, she's so cute.

Now that you mention chews. Most hamsters love a Whimzee dog chew. I get the xs or s toothbrushes but there are other shapes available.
