Exclamation I need an opinion.

I house my two female dwarf hamsters together. Last week one my girls had babies. I separated the other one into a different cage and am unsure if when the babies are big enough I should reintroduce my hamsters together. What do you think? Is it a bad idea? I'm kinda new to hamsters and have dont want one of them to get injured if I put them back together and shouldn't have. Please give my your opinion!

Hello, do you mean you have a male and let one get pregnant?

Is this an accidental pregnancy?

It sounds like one of them isn’t female! So no don’t put them back together. Unless you have just bought them and one was already pregnant. The main thing right now is don’t disturb the mother or her cage or she could kill/eat the babies. It’s a natural instinct if she feels they are under threat. So keep well away from the cage snd don’t disturb or clean anything. Just put food and water out each day, quietly, ideally when she’s in the nest or asleep. Also remove the wheel. You will need extra food as she’s feeding the babies and a selection of small pieces of fresh veg as well as hamster mix.

Carry on like that until the babies emerge from the nest on their own, then it’s usually safe to start doing the odd thing or handling them and the mother. But still don’t clean the cage just yet. When the babies get to a certain age (can’t remember- 4 to 5 weeks? Someone will know!) you need to sex them and separate the boys into a different cage. The girls can stay with the Mother till they’re 6 or 7 weeks old, then they can be rehomed.

The other hamster will be fine on his/her own and they usually need separating at some point anyway as they often fall out snd fight and the fights can be sudden and to the death.

How long was the other hamster in with the mother after the babies were born? If the other hamster is male then the mother could already be pregnant again. They can get pregnant again the day after giving birth so she will need to be on pregnancy watch for 16 days after the other hamster was removed.

Exclamation Re: I need an opinion.

Sorry for not replying I've been super busy, No they are both female. I had my sister watch them for a couple days since she has a dwarf hamster of her own and she put them together (not sure why). I didnt know she did until my hamster popped out babies and called her. I've had them both since about March/April and they have gotten along perfectly fine, they were cage mates when I bought them. And as of the babies they sadly all passed, I wasn't disturbing the mom at all but I had fluff in there so she could make a nest (petstore told me I should get it) the fluff wrapped around the babies and I didnt realize until it was too late. Thank you for all the help!
