Sand for Hamsters
I am just getting around to getting Widdle(named after an Ewok lol) a sand bath. I ordered the Niteangel Sand Box, as it seems to be good quality and a good size. However I do need to get sand prior to its arrival. I've seen that both reptile and children's sand can be good, but I was wondering if anyone in the US has any specific recommendations. I would prefer a smaller bag if possible, as I live in an apartment and I have minimal storage space. Thanks so much!

Re: Sand for Hamsters
Natural children's play sand(the kind with no dyes etc added) can easily be purchased in Home Depot(probably even Lowes etc too) here in the US even if you have to order online. It's also incredibly cheap(as in the cheapest safe option especially when you consider how much you get), but it doesn't come in a small bag. It does need preparation for safety (rinsing, sifting, and baking) but once you do that it is your safest sand option.
As far as minimal storage goes, what I would personally do is prepare sand in batches from the big bag and store them in containers that fit those batch sizes.

Okay, thank you so much! Do you know if reptile sand needs to be prepared like that as well? I can’t remember to be honest.

It does need to be rinsed. Just baking and sifting alone isn't going to get rid of all fine particles, dust, etc.

Does the same go for reptile sand? I’m just trying to decide what I want to get!

Likely not, but safety for that is honestly dubious at best. I know some people will say otherwise, though your safest choice (and best option from a financial perspective) is honestly children's play sand. It does take time to prepare and careful planning for storage but it's completely worth it.

How exactly do you rinse it?

Re: Sand for Hamsters
I would personally rinse sand in a bucket and collect any fine particles, dust, etc that rise up initially & with stirring the sand around.
