Hello and welcome to HC!
I believe that Fitch is a cheaper alternative But with a very large cage you can go without a substrate change for months and months so can't see how it works out expensive.
You can get away with spot cleaning for ages and Syrians are pretty good at using potties.
Just find his peeing spot which is usually a corner and place a sand filled corner toilet there.

hi and tyy <3
the reason why i change his bedding a lot is because it usually starts to smell quite bad after around a week and i have no clue why but im thinking it's because the room he's in is quite small? also ty for the alternatives, i'll def try fitch out!

Fitch works out about the cheapest for a paper based bedding
Kaytee clean and cozy works out cheaper than carefresh too I think
Then other non paper based beddings you could try are megazorb, probably the cheapest of them all but some people don't like the smell. I don't mind the smell butit can get tangled in long haired hamsters fur.
and then there is hemp bedding like aubiose.

That's strange that it starts to smell bad after only a week.
Do you mean the whole cage smells bad or just where he pees?
How large is his cage in dimensions? Is it bigger than a, let's say 80cmx50cm cage?
A small room shouldn't be an issue as long as its not something like a windowless cloak room.
