Default Ferplast Guinea Pig House

I have recently adopted a gorgeous hamster from an animal rescue centre and she has settled in well. She is friendly and seems happy in her new home. The only thing is that she has built her nest out in the open. She’s in a hamster heaven, which still has the plastic houses that come with it plus a coconut, but I also bought a ferplast guinea pig house, knowing those other hideys are quite small for her to build her nest. She literally never goes in it!

She has built a nest in the corner of the cage, underneath the lower platform and doesn’t seem to want to move from there! I have tried putting bedding in the house, or leaving some outside but she simply takes it to her chosen nest. I’ve also tried sprinkling food inside to tempt her in but she will eat the food and then not go back in.

I’m not sure where she slept when she was with her previous owners but do you think it’s possible she’s just got used to sleeping out in the open? It’s not a huge problem for me if that’s where she prefers to sleep but I’m wondering what to do about the house as it takes up a lot of floor space for something that isn’t being used. Should I just remove it so she’ll have more space to have a burrowing area? At the moment with her nest taking up one corner, a toilet, sand bath and freestanding wheel plus the big house there isn’t a great deal of floor space. Just wondering what it would be best to do!

I’m new to keeping hammies so this is just a guess: maybe she finds the house intimidating, an enclosed space containing unknown threats? You could try leaving the lid off so that she can explore while knowing that she can quickly get out. Then maybe if she gets used to it and takes up residence you can consider putting the lid back on

I always take all the plastic shelves, tubes and penthouse out then start with an empty cage to create a new set up which includes a Ferplast guinea pig house.

If your hamster is a Syrian, these little plastic huts are taking up space and they're of no use to her. I can't figure out how you managed to put a 10/11in Syrian sized wheel in and still have both plastic platforms in as well unless she's a dwarf hamster?

Here's a photo of one of my dwarf hamsters Hamster Heaven with the shelves removed and a Ferplast guinea pig house. She mostly sleeps in the house and sometimes under the platform on the left. The house is on the right but i plastikote the roof to water proof it hence the red/blue stripes.

She is a Syrian hamster. She has the 28cm trixie wheel and it is sideways along the lower of the two platforms, in between the two platforms. I would post a picture but I can’t figure out how to resize them! The guinea pig house is sideways underneath the higher platform.

I left the plastic houses in as our previous hamster did use them and sleep in them sometimes but she hasn’t been. I could remove one or both the platforms but I’d need to figure out what ledges to put there instead and I don’t know if it would help with the guinea pig house issue. I hadn’t thought of taking the roof off but I could try it, if I’m actually able to prise it off!

Your hamster heaven set up looks good.

Couldn't help but have my eyes instantly drawn to that little poop scoop. So cute!
