Default Door in the front or at the top?

I`m confused. Some say that a cage with front door is better with a hamster who almost screams when I touch him, other says it is the same if the cage have door at the top.

Thoughts?

Hamsters are prey animals so anything coming from above could be seen as a thread BUT as always, it very much depends on the individual hamster.

Rashy, listen to your hamsters, watch their reactions and behaviours and follow your own instincts because sometimes there are no clear answers.

For a hamster who is so scared that he almost screams when you touch him, the location of the door really may not make any difference.

I think I might have to restart the whole process as he did get very scared under the trip to the vet. I have been thinking of buying the hamster heaven maybe as the plaza were a weak cage. And tro ty tame him in the hamster heaven.

I don't think moving him would be a good idea. Why do you say that the Plaza is a weak cage? Did your hamster escape from it?

I think one collapsed after they were stacked didn’t it? It’s true they are less sturdy than a HH as they’re knockdown cages. I would say a front door is always better. With a larger cage like the plaza you do need plenty of overhead cover for a more nervous hamster - like shelves and hanging sputniks or grass hammocks - it’s quite tall - so they don’t feel too exposed from above. Also plenty of floor toys and hidey places.

Your hammy is bound to be a bit freaked out after a vet visit. They just need to be left alone for a few days to adjust again.

I wouldn’t move the hamster either. Not yet anyway. If you think the cage really isn’t working for them then maybe in two or three weeks think about moving them to a Hamster Heaven. But I’d remove the tubes and block them off and remove the penthouse.

The cage fell apart. The plastic corners did fell off the bars and the roof did fell down in the cage, even when it was not in use.

I did use the alexander or barney cage, but because of the doors, I moved him into a aquarium. I think he were more seeking when he had a smaller cage, as he did search for attention or were more qurious.
Thats why I have been thinking of the hamster heaven.
