Default Moving into a new cage advice needed

Hi all,

Over the last week or two, I’ve noticed a few moths in my room and I’ve just found there’s quite a few that seem to have made the bottom of my hamster’s cage their home. I’m going to get a new cage and throw everything out and put it in a different room to prevent them getting to her again.

I was going to get an IKEA Detolf but I’m self isolating with COVID at the minute so I can’t get it until next Saturday at the earliest. I want to move her ASAP so I’m just wondering if any other cages I can get online and delivered quickly would be suitable. She’s a Russian dwarf about 18 months old and has been in a PicoXL with a ramp to a big play pen.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I’ve seen things like the Savic Hamster Heaven, Alaska cage and other things but I wanted to ask the experts on here before I did anything.

Also, when I do move her, is there anything I can do to help her with any stress? I know it can be stressful for them after full cleans and moving cages and she’s never been a fan of a completely clean cage. Because of the moths, I won’t be able to move any bedding or any of the other stuff in there

The Hamster Heaven would be a good option for a dwarf.
Have a look on the thread "Let's see your cages" on the Forum under Housing.

The Pico XL is all plastic so you could clean it in a couple of hours and put her in a box temporarily if you'd rather go for the detolf.
If you don't want to wait and get another type of cage then
I'd reuse as many items as you can and set it up in a similar layout. Plastic, ceramic and glass can get washed in fairy liquid then sprayed with pet friendly antibac and rinsed. I put everything through the dishwasher as well.
Wooden items need to go in the freezer for a week to kill off any moth eggs.

They are probably indian pantry moths so you need to check your kitchen as well. I have them in the house too and kill them when i see one.
Not long ago i saw one flying in and out one of my dwarfs cages so housed her in a spare cage until i had cleaned her Hamster Heaven. She wasn't really stressed by it but that depends on the hamster's temperament.

I freeze the hamster mix for a week now because these moths enter the house in food like grains, flour etc.

These moths aren't harmful but multiply so fast that you could end up with them everywhere. I still see the odd one flying around and have done since January, i vacuum daily including the ceilings, one per day, time allowing. Apparently, the larvea can be on the ceiling but i haven't seen any.

Thanks Ria, I’ve been thinking about moving her anyway, she bites the play pen more than my other one did so she can only be in it when I’m around and awake. I had a proper look last night and I think I’m going to go for a Savic Plaza if I can get it delivered quickly. This little one has never been one for going through tubes like my other was, plus she used to practically live in a kitchen room tube when she was younger so I wouldn’t want her doing that in hamster heaven tubes.
That’s good, I’ll give all the plastic a good wash to keep some things the same, I’ll probably keep a shelf or two as well.
I’m going to see what delivery times I can get and I might end up waiting for the Detolf anyway and giving her cage a proper clean with the steam cleaner this weekend.

I always remove the penthouse, tubes and shelves then start with an empty cage but the Plaza is bigger of course.

Imogen here bought a detolf recently and paid an extra £40 for delivery i think she said.

You won't be able to do the usual thing of moving everything over without cleaning to help her settle. You'll need to bin all the bedding, nest, hoard etc and wash or disinfect all the contents of the cage. I'd also have a good hoover around the walls and floor where the cage is - the moths lay eggs. It's usually only around the cage area but if you've seen them on the curtains I'd hoover those as well!

So is this an upgrade replacement or a temporary replacement until you get a detolf? I'd get the hamster heaven or the savic mickey 2xl (the mickey 2xl is the same cage but with narrower bar spacing and without all the plastic stuff thats no good anyway!). It costs a little bit more usually but fairly futureproof as suitable for a robo as well.

They are a good size for a dwarf hamster and you wouldn't really need a detolf then. I don't think I'd get the savic plaza for a dwarf hamster unless you're going to make a full level for it - it's quite tall.

Savic Mickey 2XL - it's only sold by Amazon but can be there in a few days. The metal grid shelf needs taking out

PAH usually do next day delivery if something is in stock - the Hamster Sky is basically the Hamster Heaven but without the penthouse. Same size. Again tubes need to be taken out and blocked off really. It comes with hole blockers. It's a bit cheaper than the Hamster Heaven.
