Default Pets at home: wood shavings? Need to switch!

So, for the last 3 months I've been owning Remy. I've been purchasing pets at home: wood shavings. I knew that pine was unsafe (as well as other woods) but it never really crossed my mind until now to look into what the shavings are actually made out of.

And to my worrisome I found out they are pine! I want to change this asap but since I'll be switching over Remy to a detolf very soon within the next week, the bedding will probably arrive from amazon or something the same time the detolf is here.

The woodshavings are quite cheap, the ones I buy are £1-£3 for a medium bale and a deal of £5 for two medium bales at one of my stores.

Is there any substrate (I've been wanting to change the substrate to something softer and to hold burrowing tunnels better anyway) that is as cheap as that? If not a bit more expensive but for more kg?

For that price I can't suggest anything, but if you can afford to buy bigger bags of bedding there are a few to look into.

I think Megazorb is probably the cheapest at around £9, equestrian shops stock this, but some pet stores too. It's probably about £12-£15 online with postage Off the top of my head it's 85litres i think, not sure about KG - but it would be a lot.

Aubiose hemp bedding used to be around £20 if you can find some. That's another big/huge bag.

For paper based I think Fitch the 15kg box works out the cheapest at £28.50 (you can buy smaller amounts for around £10-£15) or you could try Kaytee clean and Cozy - look out for offers on amazon. I personally think it is slightly softer than Fitch but dustier. I think Kaytee works out more expensive.

I appreciate these are way more expensive than what you have been spending but these are probably huge bags in comparison and with a detolf should last you a long time (months) as you would probably only be spot cleaning, deep cleans will probably not be that necessary.

I find for burrows, that mixing 2 or 3 substrates tends to help them hold better.

Thank you! I don't mind spending more, I do seem tight but as stated before I'm out of work for a few more months until my knee fully heals. I'll look into the substrates you mentioned!

I was thinking of purchasing finch paper bedding 10kg for £22 so will keep that as an option!

But I saw a 15kg for £28... is that better?

You don't seem tight at all, I totally understand buying in bulk works out way cheaper but 1.) it means laying out a lot of money in one go and 2.) you need somewhere to store it.

Yes. 15kg for £28.50 is way cheaper, it was the cheapest one per k/g when I last worked it all out a few months ago.
