Default New Cage, Hamster being odd??(Savic Hamster Heaven)

Hey there,

I bought a new home for my Syrian yesterday. Its the Savic Hamster Heaven home.

Since he got in it yesterday afternoon almost all he's done is run constantly in his wheel. Is this normal? Is he just taking a while to settle in? The home is much much bigger than the previous cage I was using with a lot more floor space and tubing and multi level so is it just a bit overwhelming and the wheel is familar?

Im worried hes spending all night running his little legs off and not exploring / eating. But he has found at least two hides to sleep in which im happy with.

Anyone else with experience of this home or behaviour let me know

Like yours, my hamster has a large 709 square inch bin cage (but he'll be upgrading to a detolf with 950+ square inch next week) and all he does is goes for a drink, goes to sleep and runs on his wheel with the odd "expedition". Some hamsters are more "adventurous" than others and then there's those that just have most of their fun on their wheel.

My hamster has a whole wide range of fun enrichment toys but never seems to be fully interested in them, the only other thing he does besides from what I stated is sitting in his sand bath and grooming himself there and having a small flick about and then hops straight back into his wheel.

So again, perfectly normal and all depends on your hamsters personality!

Do you feed him from a feed bowl or scatter feed? I found my hamster gets more active now that I've started scatter feeding him. It's a natural behaviour and he seems to like foraging for his food. So maybe you can do that to get him to explore his enclosure more?

With the upgrading, did you only add the wheel that was "familiar"? It is better to add some stuff in that he's familiar with besides just the wheel. Since if he's just moved in he will feel quite nervous to start off with and needs some days (at least 3 - 4) to settle back in (as if you had just recently purchased him).

My plan when I move my ham is to add half of his old substrate (putting the new before I add the old half) and all of his old toys to keep him more calm when he does the move from his bin to his glass enclosure.

Hey thanks for the reply.

From his old cage we moved the wheel (as the Savic one was poor quality). And he also has a coconut he sleeps in which we put in there too but he hasn't used it he found a new hidey sleeping area instead.

In his last cage he spent most of the night just gnawing on the bars so I guess him running is a lot better than that.

He did venture out into the tubing earlier which runs outside the home then back in and then into a kind of penthouse sleeping area located on top of the cage (google the cage to see what I mean). So im probably just being a bit too impatient.

Hes also young and we've only had him a month (I think hes around 3.5 months old now) so its probably just more adjustment needed

Thanks for the advice!

Ill also consider the scatter feeding thing, he has a food bowl at the moment. The cage has two platforms with like runners he can travel across so I do put carrot down on those, but I will sprinkle some food about too

Ah yeah! Sounds a lot better than before!

He's probably overwhelmed with his new area... - if he was bar chewing (abnormal behaviour) and is now running around instead. It sounds as though he's letting off his steam and finally getting the energy out of his body that's been building up from when he was more focused on bar chewing.

I'm sure he'll be fine! He's one lucky lil ham!
