Default Toilet training troubles

So, my hamster has been toilet trained for about two weeks. He uses the toilet as intended, but has started and also been doing a weird thing.

He seems to be taking some of his food to the corner and putting them into the actual sand. Not a lot of it, so it's not really a stash but the odd finds that he puts there like bits of broken off treats from hanging food sticks as well as a few nuts.

He has also now started to pee in the wrong corner of the toilet tray, instead of the high up bit he pees on the short side and it goes over the edge. It seems as most of it gets on to the sand, but I can still see some un-soaked wee on the edging of the toilet tray.

He did it once a week, but I would keep moving some wee'd on sand to the corner I want him to wee in. And he would move there but all of a sudden wee back in the shallow sided part. It's a real hassle to keep having to try and get him to wee there as I never seem to be able to fully clean it out for the little guy as I have to leave some there to get him to wee where I want.

Any covered up toilet tray recommendations that are cheap or possibly free that no one wants anymore?

SECOND QUESTION TO SAVE MAKING SO MANY THREADS

With the detolf...

Would it be better to keep the sand in a bowl or to add it freely to one section of the enclosure? It looks nice when people add it freely but I feel like this would just make it such a pain to keep cleaning, as it's not in a bowl to easily pick up and overtime gets mixed in at the bottom with all the other substrate (of course I would add a wooden bridge as a divider but it can still seep through over a long long period of time).

What's the best choice for that?

Not long cleaned out his toilet and he's already re-putting some food there, oh dear.

I had a sandbath for him in the detolf, quite large but he's a real digger so when I upgrade him I will opt for an area of deeper sand. It's not better or worse, just feel what is more suitable for your hamster and you.

Woke up with a whole new pile of food in his toilet. Really need some help and advice on this asap! It's wasting food as it gets all sandy!

My Syrian Rory does that and always has done.
He pees in his corner toilet but often misses and pees over the edge and he chucks food in it.

I'm just glad that he pees in a toilet because not all hamsters do.

You could put cardboard around the toilet to catch the pee going over and use cheap woodchips instead of sand.

The covered toilets are too small for Syrians. I've never seen one big enough.

Do you think he likes to stand one leg on the side of the litter tray and that's why he uses the corner where the sides are lower? I wondered because I met a hamster once who used to put his leg up in the corner of the cage and pee through the bars (which was a bit annoying but also quite funny) and I've heard of a couple of other hamsters who did the same. I'm not sure there's much you can do but change the wet shavings and sand as needed.

Funny you say that Sushi!

Remy, before he had a toilet would do like a handstand against the corner and pee down the side of the plastic! It was so funny to watch him doing an acrobatics trick!

Ahh, that's sad they're all too small!

I was using woodchips before, but he ended up not peeing in the toilet and used another corner instead over his wooden toy! After I switched to sand he instantly started weeing in there (And there's no accidents in his actual sand bath now)

I'm just wondering if it would help to put the toilet on a plastic tray or the hamster sized corner toilet into a guinea pig sized one to catch the pee if it bothers you.

What you don't want to do is put him off using it. Once they are happy with something it's best not to change or fiddle about with it.

My late Syrian Henry used to reverse back as far as possible then lift his tail to pee over the toilet, that's when i started to put cardboard round it.

That's what Shamu's doing! I've never seen it before so it's interesting to know she's not the only one. It's a proper handstand with tail pointing to the ceiling. I put a toilet in her pee corner,so she's tipped it over and selected a new corner. It was a covered toilet though, I'm going to try a different style.

My enclosure is much smaller than a detolf, but a quarter is sand and I'm using a small sieve from Sainsbury's to run through it for bedding and poop. It doesn't take long, and returns the sand to something she enjoys digging in. I imagine a larger sieve would work well in a detolf for stray bits of bedding.
