Exclamation Hamster Wheel Issues - HELP ASAP! CAN'T SLEEP!

Hey there.

I need a lot of help on hamster wheels.
I own the "Pet Ting" silent spinner wheel which is a 22cm wheel especially for rats but works good for my big boy Syrian.

This is the wheel: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pet-Ting-Pr...8&rdc=1&sr=8-6

However, upon a few weeks of use, it's now not become so "silent" and it's clashing against the plastic on the back (on the stand) from where it's drooping. I searched this up and apparently it's a common issue with this wheel.

I kid you not, I have not been able to sleep for 3 days trying to persevere because I know it's a necessity to a hamster and keeps them entertained and to achieve at least their 5 mile run each night.

However, it's got so bad that I've had to adapt my time schedule to fall asleep at like 5am so he gets a bit of time to run and to take it out and fall asleep. This has been causing me to wake up at 3pm every day which makes me feel horrific and just like a waste of my day.

I've been looking at the TRIXIE silent wheel spinner on eBay for £15 which is the black version (so it fits in with the environment, green and pink seem too bold and clashy for my natural brown wooden set up).

Is it a good wheel? I heard it's the most popular wheel but I'm wondering if this will droop after awhile and start clashing on the metal bar stand.

I really need a quick reply soon so I can purchase one today online and get it ASAP.

Many thanks!

It can be hit and miss with the trixie wheels to be honest.
Mines not too bad, but I know others have sent them back.

I know it is expensive but the silent runner is pretty much silent.
cage wheels | South West Sugar Gliders

For a syrian (unless it is a very small one) it is best to get a 11-12 inch wheel.

Someone else may be able to recommend a cheaper silent wheel, but I can't. I know people buy the trixie from amazon so if they have problems they can send it back easily. But I am not sure you can choose which colour you get.

Will this one end up drooping at some point? They're too expensive to be honest, I haven't got that kind of money. I'm not in work atm.

I've had two 28cm plastic Trixie wheels and they both started banging against the stand after a few weeks so I got rid of them.

I'd recommend either the Silent Runner as linked above or the 28cm wooden Trixie wheel (which you can paint black or any other colour using Plastikote). It's on Zooplus https://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small...xercise_wheels. Both of these wheels are indeed almost silent.

Yes, I get that the Silent runners are really expensive, but they are good, I have had mine 3 years and they are fine, I am very noise sensitive due to a chronic illness so worth the investment for me.

I think the only other thing you could do is either to get a pet shop in person so you can see which ones are noisy or order online, but know you may have to return them, but with a bit of luck you might get one that is ok. It is very frustrating. I don;t recommend the silent spinners, the one i gto was the noisiest thing ever, that got sent straight back,

I have a savic orbital which is fairly quiet too,(I had to oil it when I got it, but was fine after that) and I think it used to be around £17, I can't remember what size it comes in - but you would want the larger one. It does have a spoke all the way through, so not good for long haired hamsters.

The wooden one from Zooplus looks great! However, one concern with wooden is my hamster has a habit of peeing on his wheel during his run, how would it hold up to that?

Most people paint them with Plastikote which waterproofs them. One tub is plenty. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plastikote-...2831587&sr=8-1

Ahh okay, do I use it "sparingly" on multiple coats or should I do multiple thick coats? Thank you guys so much!

Is it ok to take my hamsters wheel out at night until I receive the wheel and Plastikote because I honestly can't sleep with him running on it. I don't want to but to stay sane I'm going to have to. Do you think he will be okay?

You can put a couple of coats on, not too thick or it goes a bit sticky
It would be cruel to take his wheel away as he won;t have anything to use his energy up on.
Could you try earplugs till you can sort it out?

For the wheels I tend to do 3 fairly thin layers (because it dries faster). You need at least 2 layers.

Try not to take his wheel out because night is when they want to run the most, and it is important for them. You could look on selling sites like Facebook marketplace to see if anyone is selling a wheel very cheap. Even it's not a great wheel or quite big enough, it might tide you over until a new one arrives.
