Default Wheel size

I have a syrian hamster. He has an 8 inch wheel and I can't tell If it's too small for him or not.
So I bought him an 11 inch and it seems he can't get it moving very fast. Is it too big??
Is there a way to post videos to this thread?

Hey, def not a expert but hopefully I'll be of some help. Does it seem difficult for him to get the wheel moving? A 11 inch wheel should be fine for a small syrian though I think the minimum is considered 12inch. What brand of wheel is it?
My baby syrian has a 33cm (around 12-13inch) wheel and she can run on it just fine for the most part. Maybe he is just getting used to the new wheel, how long have you had it?
I don't know about video but you should be able to upload gifs through attachments.

An 8 inch wheel will be too small for the majority of syrian hamsters, I have only ever had 1 syrian that was small enough to use a 9 inch wheel and that was for her out of cage time, her cage wheel was 12 inches.

It should run smoothly unless there is an issue with the wheel.

The only way I know how to share videos is to post on youtube and share the link. If you don't want to share with the whole of youTube you can just set it as unlisted and not public.

Sounds like a problem with the wheel to me. 11" is fine for most Syrian hamsters. Which wheel is it? The 12" Silent Spinners were notorious for being too stiff to push round. Although you say he can't get it moving very fast, rather than not moving it much at all. A larger wheel will appear to run slower than a smaller one and sometimes they do run differently in different wheels. Also he may be just getting used to it and tentatively running at first. Our Syrian took ages to get the hang of his wheel but thunders in it now.

It should spin freely and well when you push it lightly.

Thanks for the responses.. he has only had the wheel a couple days and it is a wodent wheel.
When I spin it with my finger, it spins fine, he just doesn't seem to be running fast on it (compared to how he was running on the 8 inch.. I mean he would really go...)
This is why it leads me to think maybe it's too heavy for him? Or is it just that and it's OK for him to move slower on a larger wheel?
I also noticed him laying down beside it after running on it which he never did after using the 8 inch.
I don't have youtube account unfortunately...
Not sure if it's allowed but if anyone wants to see the video I have (it's short.. like 3 seconds of him running on it) you could email me and I can send it to you?
Bummer I can't post it here.

Hello. I'll ask one of the moderators to remove your email address as its not a secure thing to do to post it on a forum x

When they lay down beside the wheel I've found it's often after enjoying running on it. I'm guessing you're in the US as wodent wheels aren't available in the Uk any more. In fact I believe wodent wheels aren't made any more. They were taken over first and the wheels changed (maybe the quality not so good).

I have had a wodent wheel and some of them don't spin as well as other wheels. They certainly don't spin as fast or freely as some wheels. The best wheel you can get for that is the 12" silent runner (that's runner not "spinner"). It has holes in like the wodent wheel - spins incredibly well and totally silent. It also has a very safe sturdy one piece stand (I had a hamster trap a leg between a wodent wheel and its stand).

For a 12" wheel it is not bulky at all depthwise - it is just a bit taller. Our hamsters have loved those wheels. It's true they don't run quite as fast in them - but they run well in them (I think the bigger wheel looks slower when turning too).

Our current hamster has the 11" trixie wood wheel (which may or may not be available in the US) and belts along in that. Different style of wheel/running again.
