Hospital cage ideas
Just wondering what others have used as a hospital cage for a Syrian (large Syrian!). Pickle is going to the vet to have a lump looked at and I am fairly sure it will need removing so getting organised. I used the Savic spelos once before but that was for a very old not very active hamster. I don’t have it any more. The mini duna is a bit bigger than that but I’m wondering if it’s big enough for a large Syrian (even as a hospital cage). On the other hand standard duna multi may be too big. Don’t have a bin suitable and it will probably cost the same.

Re: Hospital cage ideas
What size are you thinking of Serendipity?
Asda have a plastic bin on wheels for £16 it's 84 x 54 x 44 cm
I've used the pets at home/savic rody small cage before
Savic Rody Cage AKA Pets at Home Medium Cage | Cosmic Hamsters - YouTube - which is slightly better than the spelos as squarer in shape.

Re: Hospital cage ideas
I'd go for the 64l rub if you have the tools and time to convert it. It's £16 at Morrisons supermarket at the moment.

Re: Hospital cage ideas
It’s for a hospital cage so I think it needs to be smaller than that - but not sure of the best size. I’d have thought 60cm but the mini duna is 55 and the standard duna 75. No way I could cope with making a bin cage right now! If it was for a dwarf an open bin might be ok but even a post op Syrian would need a lid I think! The 64 litre rub bin looks about the right size though maybe - 60cm internally.
Just wondered if anyone has used a hospital cage for a Syrian and a recommendation- ghosts in snow? I think the mini duna is probably ok but not sure.

What do you need to put in a hospital cage?

Re: Hospital cage ideas
Good question. Not a lot I think. Substrate, a house, no wheel, no shelves, food and water. Maybe a tunnel. Not sure how long they stay in it either.

Re: Hospital cage ideas
I don't think a few cm here or there will matter to Pickle because he's not going to be in there for long.
I'd just get one off gumtree that looks suitable for purpose.

Re: Hospital cage ideas
I've ordered a mini duna. 55cm is probably fine for a temporary hospital cage when they're woozy and post op. It was only £23. I probably won't need it now I was pretty sure the vet would want to remove his lump - not so sure now I felt it again tonight - the lump is his scent gland - maybe it's a cyst or something. It doesn't seem infected. Oh well I can always send it back.
