Thank you Luna. No problem - I appreciate your reply and had no idea what size it should be but then thought 80cm sounded a bit big for a hospital cage.

Spoke too soon. Porton phoned me to say they only had the mini duna in pink. I am just not a pink person. Pink annoys me . So had to get it from PAH instead which cost a few pounds more. Silly of me but I know the pink would annoy me. PAH had the “space” one but it’s just white and you don’t have to use the space stickers (although strangely they look quite fun lol). So it looks like I’ve paid a few pounds more for space stickers. Although porton had it on sale.

Pickle is absolutely fine and had a real romp on the sofa last night but I am assuming it is a small tumour so needs looking at ASAP.

I get you, I don't think I could cope with a pink cage I used to hate pink and now I actually will wear something in that colour sometimes!!!! I don't know what happened!

I think the size of a hospital cage depends on what is wrong with the hamster, Twinkle stayed in the savic plaza after his concussion/contusion as he was just too poorly to move, although I took all shelving and wheel out. He wasn't climbing up bars. but if a hamster has had an operation I can understand they may still may be a bit more active you just don't want them climbing and falling off anything.

Yes I think that is it - avoiding injury when they are woozy snd maybe not so mobile but a lump removal may not affect mobility that much. Ghosts in snow PMd me with something similar - a mini duna for an op where you don’t want them being too active and damaging their wound but also up to 60cm ish. There isn’t a 60cm tank style and I think the 75cm standard duna would defeat the object as not much smaller than his current cage. Plus he can come out of the cage regularly if need be. A 60cm bin would be ideal but I just have too much going on to start thinking about making bin cages - and am cack handed lol.

Pink - yes there is pink and pink! I don’t mind deep pink or even pale pink, it’s that standard bright girly pink plastic that annoys me . I have been going on about it for about 10 years when everything for girls started to be pink- laptops - all sorts.

I was Googling ladies gardening tools the other day looking for something smaller and all that came up was pink! Considering this is the 21st century it seems a bit sexist to think that pink = girls. What’s wrong with yellow, mauve, green or light blue?! I suppose manufacturers find they sell. But when I was a kid yellow or white was girly (dresses, shoes etc). Or any colour! Likewise all boys stuff is now black! We will all go colour blind.

Rant over! At least the space stickers are multicoloured and genderless (I think).

This is disgraceful. They really are doing their best to aim hamster cages at children to make hamsters look like toys.
Who has ever seen an astronaut hamster nesting in a rocket.
Rant over. I don't like pink either.

Just wanted to add that I LOVE pink and just had my bedroom painted in it. One wall barbie pink the other 3 very pale pink.

. I am sure a lot of people like pink! Your bedroom sounds lovely. With paint there are other colour options. A pink cage isn’t for me

Ria I thought the same - they are appealing to kids with the princess and space mini dunas. I hope nobody buys one for a Syrian and a plastic rocket house (with a sharp point on top!) is not good for a hamster. Small and not open underneath. I know some people used to like it for a shy dwarf hamster even though it is below the considered minimum - but the idea someone might put a Syrian in it!

This is also on Pickle's thread but - here's my hospital cage For future reference for ideas. It's a mini duna with a house (all corners and edges sanded to be smooth/curved), a ceramic hide, two chews, food bowl and water bottle, paper substrate and nesting material. You can't really fit anything else in.

It achieves the object of not too much activity or climbing or things to catch or rub the wound against.

A smaller house would have meant I could have added a tunnel or tube maybe, but I was forgetting how large Pickle is - I had a plastic round igloo that might have been ok and fitted in better but he is quite big for it - it's not very tall - plus the entrance is narrow and his sides would rub.

So I think the mini duna is good as a hospital cage - for an average sized syrian with an averaged size house and one extra safe toy. But in hindsight, the standard duna multy with a bigger house in might have been better! For a larger Syrian.

It'll be fine as it is for a few days, but I would like to have added a tunnel.

I tried a shoebox house first but it really was too big for the cage. It fitted but filled far too much of the cage.

You could still fit a tunnel in by moving the bottle to the left.
