Question question about cage upgrades

ok so i got sweet lil chinese hamster (her name's dolly :3) from the pet store and right now she's living in a tiny tales cage she's been active and friendly but i wanna give her a bigger space to run around in. i have a 16x21in sterilite bin already in my house and although i know that's under the minimum but... my mom told me that her friend was in need of a new aquarium for his turtle and that she'd ask for his old aquarium (which is bigger than the bin i have and definitely exceeds the minimum amount of space for a hamster enclosure). so would it be ok if i fixed up that bin for her and had her in there while i wait to get something bigger? i'm just kind of worried about freaking her out... sorry if this comes off as amateurish and/or annoying btw, i'm a first time hammy owner and i'm just so scared of hurting her or anything

Default Re: question about cage upgrades

Hi and welcome to HC!

I have no idea what a tiny tales cage is but it doesn't sound exciting.
Are you able to mesh the lid of the bin to give her enough ventilation and keep her safe?
I think as long as you move all her old substrate and things over then set it up in a similar layout she should be alright until you get the aquarium, set it up and make a meshed lid for it. I'd try and keep the nest and hoard intact as much as possible when taking them out.

I've moved all our hamsters at some point and they may go underground for a couple of days after moving and then its important to leave them alone to settle into their new environment but usually they enjoy more space and more things to explore.

I must admit that i'm not familiar with chinese hamsters because i've never had one.
