Default My hamster's cage (Syrian Hamster/Savic Hamster Heaven)

A while ago, when I had just got my hamster, I posted on here asking for criticism on my hamster’s cage. I just wanted to post the most up-to-date version of his cage - I’m so happy with how it looks! I know it’s not perfect, but I can tell that he’s happy in it (he hasn’t shown a single sign of stress, and utilises every inch of it). I will probably be upgrading to a bigger enclosure in the future, but for now, I’m very happy with the enclosure he has now lol.

(Despite how happy I am with it, I’m more than happy to take any criticism )

Hiya! I see so many good things in this cage, it is wonderful: the multi-chamber hide, the hide on top of it, the large wheel, the little sand bath. I think you did a great job considering the space. 2 further suggestions/questions: how deep is the bedding? 6 inches is recommanded at least in some part of the cage (and I would suggest you top up the part with the multichamber hide etc. to encourage burrowing underneath) and I see you have a food bowl, but maybe you could stray sprinkling the food as it encourages them to forage which is a great boredom breaker. Have fun with your super cute hammie!

The bedding is about 6 inches deep - the only place where it's not filled to the top is where the wheel is, since it won't fit otherwise. I'll definitely try that with his hideout, though! Cleaning would be a nightmare, but I can imagine he'd have a blast digging through lol.

With the food bowl, I generally put about 1/2 scattered around his cage and 1/2 in his food bowl, just in case he should have any trouble finding the food around his cage lol. Some days I won't use the food bowl at all, and I'll just use one of those cardboard treat parcel things.

your hamster is very cute. If you want to get more bedding in a barred cage but with less mess, I used to use cardboard or grass mats tied with hamster safe string to the side. This is a video I did about it if you are interested.

Overall the only thing I can think of suggesting is that because it is a barred cage I think you could do something to fill the height up a bit, i.e. a ledge, or shelf in the corners, or maybe a long wooden bendy ladder that you can hang from one side to the other or a tunnel. I have done that before with hamster safe string such as jute or sisal.

Also just to let you know that orange hide thing with the holes in, is made of compressed wood and honey and isn't regarded as being safe for a hamster if it is chewed. Ok for free roaming, but I wouldn't use in a cage. You are not the only one not knowing this, I didn't use to and gave similar itmes to my hamster. They advertise it as 'eddible wood' but you don't really want your hamsters eating wood, far better things for them to be eating. They only eat it because honey has been added.

I've been thinking of doing that with the grass mats, I just haven't got the money for them at the moment unfortunately. It's definitely something I'll try in the future once I have the money for them, though. I'm not too worried about it for the moment, since he loves digging around in his new house - it sounds like an earthquake in there lol.

I didn't even realise that was an edible thing - I just thought it was made of wood and food colouring. Probably because my hamster refuses to chew on anything inedible lol. Thankfully, I was gonna replace it anyway since I don't like how much unneccessary space it takes up. Thank you for the heads up!

Cardboard from the recycling is always a free alternative if you put it at the back maybe, so you can still see what your hamster gets up to.
You could then build up the bedding more under his hide and it wouldn't cause you any mess. Just a thought
