Default Robo and Hamster Heaven

I can't make up my mind whether a Hamster Heaven would be suitable for a Robo or not.

Does anyone keep a Robo in one?

The 80x30 tank was great for Gordon who was small, timid, had lived a good part of his life in a tiny pet shop tank, never showed any signs of stress and did not want out of cage time so he liked it in there.

Monty is a big Robo and i've seen him jump up the side of the tank when he sees me, the bringer of treats but maybe he's jumping because he wants more space.
I'm thinking of moving him into the spare Hamster Heaven but am a bit concerned about bar spacing and the little gap between door and front.

I still have the Mickey 2XL but the door is quite stiff and it doesn't have a top door. I do wonder if this cage would be the better option though.

Are the bases of the HH and the Mickey identical and interchangeable?

Any thoughts and advice anyone?

I think a determined Robo could get their head through the HH bars but not necessarily the rest of the body (so they might get stuck). Lots of people do keep Robos in the HH without any issues but the Mickey is probably a safer option. The bases of the HH and Mickey are identical and interchangeable.

Monty sounds quite social so he might appreciate the interaction a barred cage offers.

I had our Robo in the Mickey 2XL and thought it was ideal Personally I wouldn't put a robo in a Hamster Heaven or a cage with 1cm bar spacing. The narrow bar spacing of the Mickey 2XL is way better for them. How is the door stiff? Do you mean fastening it? I developed a technique for closing mine onto the second bar (ie tighter closed fit) without it being too noisy - just kind of doing it slowly and pulling it onto the second bar. You can't close it on the first bar as it leaves a gap that a robo could get stuck in.

Despite it's low height it did seem surprisingly high with a robo in it and they can scramble up the bars sometimes, so set up needs to be done carefully, but I'm sure you already know that.

If the problem with the HH is the bar spacing, then you could cover the cage in 1 cm, or however small it needs to be mesh, fastening it down on the base. I did that when I had a barred cage, after my then-hamster somehow squeezed himself through the bars. He never escaped again, besides when I stupidly forgot to close his door, which happened a lot more than you'd think.

Yes there are differences of opinion and some is personal Others have kept a robo in a 1cm bar cage. Personally I would be worried about it. But it may depend on the personality of the robo - and also the size of the robo. I feel happier with 7mm bar spacing for a robo.

Thank you all.

I've checked the door of the Mickey again and it has always been closed on the first bar. I can tell by the wear on the bars. I've tried to close it on the second bar but it doesn't work so this particular cage is only suitable for a bigger hamster.

I've set the HH up for a Robo with more substrate and will add some of Monty's, lots of places to go while considering fall risks and will put some of his things in before i move him over.
Monty is a big Robo but its difficult to assess a hamster's personality while in a tank so i don't know whether he'd want to escape or not. I don't think that he would because he hasn't attempted an escape from his tank and there is a route out via a nibble stick when the lid is off. Something that hadn't ocurred to me rightaway.

The only real issue is if they did try to escape they can get stuck in the bars. Like on this photo! Although the bar spacing on this looks bigger than 1cm possibly.

That's not a hamster heaven in this photo but i'm taking on board what you're saying. I haven't moved him over yet and will ask my OH to have a look at the Mickey door when i get back from work tomorrow. That's another issue. The cage has to be OH proof because he had closed the door on the first bar when Clarissa escaped for a whole night and he's got the hang of the HH door now.
