Lightbulb Fabric washable bedding?

I was looking for diy bedding and I found this video:

My Homemade Washable Hamster Bedding by Hammy Time - YouTube

I was wondering if this is even safe for hamsters. The lady? Girl? Said that she had large pieces so they can’t be swallowed. This could safe tons of money, and be fantastic!
What are your thoughts on this?

I definitely wouldn’t recommend any kind of fabric bedding, anything that van be chewed can be dangerous, depending on the fabric loose threads can get wrapped around limbs or swallowed, all sorts of issues, from a ham’s point of view I don’t think it would go down well, imagine trying to dig & burrow in large pieces of fabric or any kind of fabric really.
I would stick to the usual kinds of substrate, you really don’t need to do much cleaning very often, only spot cleaning mostly so after the initial set up costs are quite niminal.

I am amazed that this kind of bedding is recommended. It could be so dangerous. Agree totally with cypher.

I use fitch paper bedding for my hamster's cages. My robo, Rafferty has the hamster heaven and Tarak has a 100 x 50cm cage so they only need a major clean every 4 weeks, even then I dont take all the bedding out.

Just because they are bigger pieces of material doesn't mean they won't try to pouch or nibble on them.

I learnt my lesson as a kid when I placed my hamster cage too close to my floor length bedroom curtains. There wasn't much left in the morning. They had to be shortened to window sill length Luckily my hamster was ok.

so it's a big NO from me.

If you notice the date on the video it is actually from 2015 and her other videos around the same time show her using a bin cage that is combined with critter trails and stacked 3 tall. Her newer videos show she now only uses paper bedding and a much more suitable enclosure.
Additionally I don't think this would even actually save money? Because its fabric it would not hide the smell of urine at all, which would mean it would need to be cleaned more often. You would be having to use a lot of water and electricity washing and drying it each week. Add the cost of whatever soap you would be using to clean it too because as someone who has had many pets pee on blankets I assure you just water will never take the smell out. Even with strong laundry detergents sometimes things will still smell of urine after being washed twice.
I would personally never put anything fabric inside of a hamsters cage. I have seen too many die from loose threads and fibres.

Hi all thank you for your replies - I do agree, I was rather sceptical myself, but wanted to see what more experienced people thought!

I've seen that video too! I don't think it's to be recommended really (or necessary). Anyway I would rather bin bedding than wash it ha ha. Hamsters will use anything nice and soft and they don't know what's good for them and what isn't.
