Post Savic Plaza or Heaven

I am looking to get my first hamster at the end of this month (a hybrid dwarf) and have been looking at enclosures. Unfortunately bin cages and aquariums are unsuitable for me at this moment so I have been looking into bar cages. I was very disappointed to see that almost all bar cages are no where near the minimum floor space needed. The two looking best to me are the savic hamster heaven and savic plaza. As I would be getting a dwarf a lot of people have said the accessories (slides, ramps) would be unsuitable but I am looking for the cage itself. Can anyone say which of these cages would be best/ most suitable?

I use the hamster heaven for my roborovski and have taken out all the plastic shelves and tubes.

The plazza has narrower bar spacing and is quite tall. Would need to find a way to make it fall proof such as shelves and deep bedding.

Hi and welcome to HC!

All our dwarfs live in Hamster Heavens. I also take all the tubes and shelves out then start with an empty cage. Here's a photo of a Hamster Heaven set up for a dwarf.

I can only talk re the savic plaza, but if you were to use it for a dwarf, you would definitely need more shelving in it to break up any potential long falls.

I have just been looking at hamster cages and there is this one too that you might want to consider, i have no personal experience of it, but height wise it's shorter than the savic plaza

Ritz Large Rat and Hamster Cage with Shelf - Black or Grey - Little Pet Warehouse

May also be cheaper elsewhere

I’d get the hamster heaven . The plaza is very tall and would need a full level really to make it safe. The Hamster Heaven is a good size and height for a dwarf hamster and one of the lowest hamster cages (about 36cm tall internally). But you would need to remove the tubes and penthouse (personally I’d remove the shelves as well and start with an empty cage as others have done).

If it was for a Robo I would consider a 100 cm cage but the 80 x 50 HH is good for a Russian dwarf. The lower height is important to avoid injuries from falls - even then you want a good depth of substrate snd ensure any hard or sharp items are under or on a shelf (so they can’t be landed on).

I have the Savic Mickey 2XL which is the identical cage but narrower bar spacing and no tubes and plastic stuff. Our Robo was happy in that size cage and plenty of space to fit a labyrinth house (that is definitely worth getting). I would get the HH and spend the difference on a good house and wheel. The 21cm silent runner is a great wheel fir a dwarf and the trixie or Rodipet labyrinth houses are good too. A labyrinth house would double up as a shelf and you could have a smaller corner shelf above it maybe. I use rat Sputnik in my cages too - even our little Robo had a rat Sputnik - they give good overhead cover (which helps hamsters feel secure). For access to it you’d probably need it hanging next to a shelf or a tube tied to the roof leading from a shelf. If you put bedding in them it makes an extra hidey place.

The HH is a fairly futureproof cage as suitable for most species - they can be a good starter cage for a Syrian as well and some Syrians won’t need anything bigger (most do better with a bit more space though).

I wouldn’t get the Plaza fir a dwarf hamster personally - but maybe for a Robo with a full level fitted.
