Angry Tiny pet shop cages

I know this is often discussed and it (hopefully) disgusts all of the people on this forum to see tiny cages being advertised as suitable for hamsters. I have come to accept that pet shops will continue to stock ridiculously small housing and I have to put up with buying them anyway, but shouldn't the RSPCA do something about it? I looked up the sizes of pet shop basic wire cages and they are much smaller than the RSPCA's recommended minimum of 80cm x 50cm:

Small : depth 25 x height 30 x width 47cm
Medium: d25 x h30 x w50cm
Large: d30 x h38 x w59cm

These cages are advertised as complete hamster homes, implying that you need nothing else. A worker in the pets at home nearest to me told me that they sell on average one hamster a day there, and I am certain that almost every single sale is with a cage much too small for a hamster. They don't even stock big enough cages in their stores at all. I know that really they are just out to make money but you would have thought they would make some effort to stock the right cage size for those who want.

Yesterday I went to pet shop to get my hamster a bigger wheel (as she has almost grown out of the medium 17cm one) but after looking around, I couldn't even find a bigger one at all, so I came home only to find they didn't have any online either!

.

Anyway, as a side point, does anyone know good website to get a larger wheel on? I don't have a big budget but if I have to pay a lot to get a decent one I will.

I think the 28cm Trixie wheel is in stock on Amazon. Just google 28cm Trixie wheel and suppliers will come up.

P@h sells the Hamster Heaven which people could buy then take all the plastic out to have a perfectly good cage.

Trouble is that a lot of cages are aimed at children and the manufacturers are the real culprits. If they would stop producing this rubbish then shops couldn't sell it.

Funnily enough I have just done a bad cage review on my YouTube channel that pets at home sells. At its narrowest it is 28cm wide!!! It's curved so hard to put a wheel in it.

I think this post may get taken down as I think it may be against the forum rules, but there is a petition going around to try and change things. I am not allowed to link it here due to the rules, maybe google it and see what you can find.

The RSPCA have teamed up with Pets at home to help tackle animal cruelty. Call me cynical but maybe that's why they no longer talk about cage size!!!!

A 11inch (28cm) trixie wheel is now available for around £9.99 i think it on Amazon.

For wheels, you can order some big ones on amazon and also on "Exotic Nutrition" for Silent Runners and Wodent Wheels.

Its the same thing here in norway. I think the laws and it takes a lot off work to do something with this. The only thing that can change this a little bit, is that new hamster owners starts to read about hamsters and what good hamster care is.

I wasn't aware either, until it was pointed out to me.

Yes that is the wheel. Have a quick google and see if you can find it cheaper elsewhere- I thought mine was only £9.99 but that was a few years ago.

Yes it is still going on. Even when the RSPCA did have a recommended minimum size, the pet shops still stocked tiny cages because legally they can. There is no legal precedent as to suitable cage size. The onus is on the owner to meet the pet’s welfare needs. Under the animal welfare legislation. For pet stores it is commercial- they can buy these tiny cages wholesale for about £6 and sell them for £30.

To give Pets at Home their due - they do actually stock a reasonably good range of good sized cages like the Hamster Heaven and Savic plaza. But assume they also stock the smaller ones as they sell.

The RSPCA no longer publish a minimum cage size - they just say things like - plenty of space (which is subjective) especially at night. It does say plenty of floorspace after toys, houses etc though.

Im not sure if its the same for every p@H but when I asked about buying a hamster they said they wouldn't a Syrian unless that person has a bigger cage, they said the minimum needs to be 100cm. It might just be my p@h that says that but maybe they're starting to change?
