Question Is this cage okay for all 3 hamster species?

Hi, I'm a new member of hamster central and I was just wondering if anyone can take a look at my cage set up and tell me if you think it's okay? I have had hamsters in the past but they have all passed on now and I'm looking to adopt a new one soon. I DIYed this bin cage with my dad's help thinking that it would be perfect for a hamster but now I'm seeing some people online saying that 1,000 sq. in. is the minimum recommendation for Syrians? I haven't decided on what species of hamster I'll be getting yet, so could you tell me if you think this cage is suitable for all 3 domesticated species or if it's not big enough for one or more of them?

The dimensions (measured on the inside of the cage) are 36"l × 17.5"w × 17.5"h, so 630 sq. in. if I did the math correctly.

Also I know you can't tell from the picture but I have approximately 6 inches / 36 Liters of paper bedding ( an off brand of carefresh), and the standing wheel is 8" and the saucer wheel is 7". And yes there is a tissue box in there. Don't worry, the plastic is taken off. My old hamster loved making her nest in tissue boxes, lol, I miss her so much and I'm so excited to hopefully get my new hamster soon!

Sorry if this post is kinda long, but thank you for your time in advance

I hope these links work!

I have no idea in inches, but is this 80 cm or longer?

Hi and welcome.

Your cage is a good size, I think it would be a good size for dwarfs and some syrians. Obviously, with a syrian you will need to get a bigger wheel 11-12 inches.

I think where the 1000sq inches comes from is that a lot of hamsters, especially female syrians may be happier in a cage that size, but every hamster is different.

I started off with a Syrian in a cage that was 631sq inches, then I moved up to a 774sq inch cage and now I have a syrian in a cage that is 850sq inches (I think).

Don't worry your cage is a good size.

Yes it should be fine for all species but possibly a bit narrow for a Syrian - some of their stuff is quite large. But really should be fine for most Syrians. For some Syrians they may need something bigger. Hamsters have different personalities as well but yes the size is ok. As Luna said you would need a bigger wheel for a Syrian - although 8” diameter is technically a minimum, they do much better with an 11” wheel which is the norm really. The flying saucer is definitely too small for a Syrian but fine for a dwarf.

Hi, the wheel is fine for a dwarf hamster but too small for a Syrian to run comfortably with a straight back. I think i have the same one for my dwarfs but they're 7in not 8in ones so probably a different wheel.

The bin cage looks lovely and a good size but i would have added a meshed front window so the hamster can look out and you can sit by the cage chatting so the new hamster gets to know you, your voice and your smell.

The cage is perfectly fine in terms of sizing, although I do recommend getting a clear bin cage because it is better for the hamster to know when it is day or night. I do recommend getting a bigger wheel (minimum is 8 inches for dwarfs and 11 inches for Syrians) and also try to reduce the use of plastic items and add more natural items like wood bridges more chew toys. Other than that I say your cage is perfect!
