Unhappy Spruce bedding splinters

Hello,

I am becoming very desperate about the bedding. I have ordered tons of bedding Kaytee Clean and Cozy, and there were hard pieces of plastics in it and other disgusting stuff. Also, it was extremely dusty.

SO I threw it out and got some spruce wood shavings. I have discovered now that there can be wooden splinters. They are not very sharp and they do not pierce skin. They are just very uncomfortable. I am trying to take them out, but I do not think I can get them all (I am cleaning 500 liters of bedding).

Do you think they can harm the hamster when burrowing? Is my bedding low quality, or others have it too?

Thank you : (

That's really bad about the Kaytee which i've never had any problems with. I hope you took some photos and will contact the supplier for a refund.

As for the wood shavings. I think you just have to let it go through your hands and remove any sharp and stabby bits. I'm not sure if they could hurt a hamster but i wouldn't take a chance myself.

That is unusual with spruce shavings. I found aspen to be a bit sharp abd splintery. But to answer the question yes hamsters can get splinters. On the other hand they chew wood houses and don’t seem to bother about the wood splintering. But maybe chewed wood is different. There were a number of cases a few years ago of hamsters feet bleeding after running in wood trixie wheels that had the odd small splinter (the new wood trixie wheel has a cork running track).

Where can you get bedding from? Zooplus sell chipsi classic which is part kiln dried pine and part spruce. They also sell Hugro hemp bedding.

My last bag of Kaytee clean and cozy was very dusty too and it put me off it so I’ve stuck with Fitch (recycled food grade paper) but that’s only available in the Uk. Hemp might be a good option

Thank you Ria and Serendipity. I went through the bedding and checked it, ehich took me an eternity. But at the end (and based on your responses) I have decided to buy a new one. I want to build Yasmin comfortable home, where she can be happy, not something that I might worry about and might hurt her.

I have chosen local supplier of soft spruce wood shavings without dust, which should be ECO as well. Based on the picture and price I hope these can be the standard I imagine. The supplier only creates wooden beddings for animals.
