Default Can 2 hamsters share a play area?

Can 2 syrian hamsters share a play area? No, not meaning being physically in at the same time - just using the same play space. The reason I am asking is because I have a project in mind. I would like to get 2-3 stackable storage bins like those used to make bin cages. I want to basically make 3 bin cages, then cut holes in the bottom of 2 of them for tubes to feed through. This would make it a 3 story high bin cage. I want to use it as a play area that I can walk away from - somewhere the hamsters can go while i'm cleaning their cage, or just for a little bit of fun. I just know that I can't make 2 or 3 of these things (one for each hamster) because my house would be entirely taken up by hamster play bins! Will the syrians get too territorial or feel threatened if they smell another hamster has been in the play area before them?

well i let mine both run around in the same space, but thats a whole room.
But i see no problem with using the same bins, but maybe if you don't use badding and wipe the surface inbetween hamsters with some safe baby wipes. That should remove a lot of the smell plus clean up wee and dirt.

But generally i don't think they find it threatening just interesting to know another ham is around and will spark lots of scent marking as they each try to claim the space. But other then that i wouldn't see it would cause much else!

yes, i think that's what i was trying to avoid, was having to clean the entire setup between hamsters. i would probably just put paper towels down for them. i'm going to design it so that each bin has a 'door' in one side, on the ends. i'm going to use the bits of fence from a Joy rodent enclosure to make the doors. I'm not sure what i will use for a latch yet. then i can just open the door to each floor, stick my hand in and do a spot clean.
