Melanine wood for cage - flaky
Hello everyone,
I wanted to build my hamster a melanine wood cage with plexiglass. Today, the wood arrived. I have noticed that the edges of the wood are a bit flaky (melanine is falling down a little bit). I want the edges to cover with melanine tape, but how about the flakes? How to seal them? Is acquarium silicone enough? Have you has the same problem?
Thank you,
Tereza

You could maybe try using sand paper to smooth the flaky parts? Not an expert in that kind of stuff.

Thank you for the reply the thing is that melamine is a protective thin layer which should not be damaged. Hamster can chew through the wooden parts underneath. So if I clean it with sand paper, I will damage the melamine layer more.

I've only ever made plastic bin cages and have never built an enclosure from melamine.
I would be inclined to use wood or metal corner brackets to cover and re-enforce the corners. Not sure that tape would be strong enough and could get chewed by a determined hamster but i really don't know.

Is there any chance you could get a refund? Because a lot of people make the Linmon cage - an IKEA hack, and the melamine board is very good and cheap. Basically three Linmon table tops at about 5 each. If you watch the video it tells you everything needed to make the cage

Thank you for the reply. I have seen the video many times, also from ErinsAnimals, Hopping Hammy and Victoria Raechel. They have flaky melamine boards as well, if you look into in very carefully. They do not seem to consider it a problem it seems.
The boards I bought are made for my needs - these are 200 cm x 55 x 100 cm. That is why i cant refund them.
