Ferplast multy maxi duna cage help!!!
Hello,
I currently have the Ferplast maxi multy duna for my Syrian. He has been in this cage for about 8 months. He has lots of bedding and enrichment but has recently started climbing upside down on the bars, biting the bars as well as biting any other part of the cage he can get his teeth round. Is there anything I can do to stop him doing this and make him happier? Or, would I be better getting the skyline Marrakesh cage instead. The holes look smaller on the lid so I am wondering if it would stop him biting. The noise he is making is driving me insane and I hate to think he is stressed or bored. Please help. Thanks in advance

Re: Ferplast multy maxi duna cage help!!!
Have you recently cleaned him out? That can make then stressed and try to chew their way out - if it’s been a full cage clean. Is there somewhere dark for him to retreat to? Eg large house or nesting box that’s dark inside or a platform to sit under. They don’t like feeling too exposed from above. Also check his wheel is spinning ok. Sometimes they bar chewing to tell you something is wrong.
The Marrakesh is the same size basically - no bigger. In fact the maxi duna is a bit deeper so a bit bigger overall. It’s true there would be no bars to chew. When did he start doing this?

Re: Ferplast multy maxi duna cage help!!!
This is my cage. He has a 28cm wheel, hides underneath the bedding, a rodipet multi chamber, a sand bath, as well as some chew toys and tunnels. I don’t know what else to do. He only started doing this about a month ago and I can’t think of anything I have done to cause it, only do half cleans at the most.
Sorry for the messy cage he is still up and playing this morning

It looks fine. It’s difficult to have hanging toys in tank style cages but they do like some overhead cover so they don’t feel exposed. Some kind of platform on legs might help at the end opposite his house. Funny it has just started now though. How often do you clean him out? That can stress them and make them want to chew their way out.

I will look into some kind of platform or at least some more cover. I usually spot clean his toilet, sand bath and any other areas that might need doing every few days and I do a half clean about every month to 6 weeks. He also has a play pen which he enjoys going in. I guess I will just have to see what i can do and hope that he settles down. Thanks again

Re: Ferplast multy maxi duna cage help!!!
I'll likely get shot down in flames but I think there is too much bedding in it. The cage is huge but he is able to access that roof bar area by climbing up the bedding and it's taking up a lot of the floor running space. None of my syrians dig that much so I don't use that much bedding except in the nesting area

Re: Ferplast multy maxi duna cage help!!!
That is a good point . It doesn’t need to be that deep at that end. If he has the trixie labyrinth house that will mimic a burrow anyway. It would be interesting to see if he still tries to monkey bar if the bedding is lower at that end- he could still scale the wheel possible but it wouldn’t be so easy. If a platform is difficult to fit in then a large cork tunnel can be good - that just sits on top of the substrate and as it’s a large tunnel it is like overhead cover. But then he could still reach the roof from the top of that or a platform. But he might not bother if he’s distracted by the additional enrichment.
If he’s not frantic or chewing the bars much I wouldn’t worry too much about the monkey barring. Has anything changed recently that could have freaked him out? Cage move location or something? New pet?

Re: Ferplast multy maxi duna cage help!!!
No nothing has changed that I can think of. He has started getting up at about 4/5pm and then going to bed around 8pm and then getting up again later. Whereas he used to get up at about 11pm. I don't understand why that is.
I have kept the depth at the other end as he loves to burrow and play in it. I have moved a few things around and buried more things under the deep substrate. Tonight he doesn't seem to be climbing and biting the bars as much. He is still chewing the sides of the cage anywhere he can get his teeth round. Hopefully moving things around has helped him. I have also just bought some new toys from zooplus so I am hoping that having overhead cover and more things to do will help. Thanks for everyone's advice

I'm having the same problem with the exact same cage, did your hamster stop doing this? What have you changed?
