Question Dampness smell from tank?

Hey, I've been posting a fair amount on here recently but just got a lot of questions, sorry
I got a tank second hand and it has been cleaned out multiple times before I put anything in it. I decided to just go ahead with it and have filled it up and my hamster has been loving it. However, there is still the smell of dampness coming from the tank. I assume because it was used as a fish tank before. It was cleaned and dried thoroughly but the smell is still there and somehow worse with the bedding? Not awful but it's definitely there.
Has anyone dealt with this before? If so, were you able to solve the problem? Or is it just how its gonna be from now on?
Thank you

Default Re: Dampness smell from tank?

I asked a while ago how to get rid of a salt smell in an aquarium and rubbing the inside with bicarb then leaving it covered to get to work and then to rinse well was suggested.

I was enquiring on some else's behalf who bought a tank in the end without a smell so it hasn't been tried.

I wonder if a bottom layer of wood chips would absorb the smell then the regular substrate on top of it. I'm suggesting that because woodchips worked better than paperbased to absorb the pee smell when i had a diabetic dwarf.

The smell is probably in the sealant rather than the glass.
Do you think that your hamster is bothered by it?

I dont think he's even noticed if I'm honest. I'm gonna try the wood chips the next time I do a big clean, see if it helps at all. Like I said it's not awful, it's just definitely there. It's almost like by putting the bedding in a new smell was created because it's not the exact same as before 😂
