New cage?
Our newest dwarf have a duna fun cage, the one who is large, but without the bars. I feel is should give her more space. Before she got the duna cage, she was a bar biter. I`m not sure of what cage I should give her, or if I should try to connect the cage with an another cage.
Some people say that they notice a positive change when the hand comes from the hand, and not the top.
What should I do?

Re: New cage?
What cage was she in when she was bar chewing? If it was a small cage it may be she was chewing due to lack of space & enrichment, the hamster heaven (used without the tubes & penthouse) is a good cage for a dwarf with enough space for plenty of enrichment & enough height for a 8-9” wheel.
If she was in a larger cage before then you might want to think about something like a detolf or a tank style cage, the Skyline Small Pet Terrarium Marrakesh available from Zooplus is a good option, I’m not really up to date with tank type cages so someone else might have more ideas.

Re: New cage?
Hi! I have a few questions
1. Is she chewing the bars now?
2. What are the square inches of this cage
3. Is she showing any signs of stress
If she isn’t chewing the bars, or showing any signs of stress, and the floor space is more than 450, then it’s probably fine

Re: New cage?
If it’s the duna fun large (but with the bars removed) it is basically about the same as a standard duna multy- about 75 x 45cm. So it’s a good size. A front door is better for interaction in my view and I much prefer it to top access but most tank style cages are top opening so you would be looking at a cage really. I would second the hamster heaven as a good cage with the tubes and penthouse removed. Lovely big front door and low height which is better for a dwarf hamster. It isn’t that much bigger than a duna multy but the extra bit of space does maje a difference and it has more scope for enrichment as you can attach things to the bars.
An exo Terra terrarium 90cm is an excellent choice - glass tank style but with front opening doors but unless you can find a second hand one they are massively expensive. Over £250.
Another option could be the maxi duna multy. That is 100 x 50cm and a lot of scope for enrichment - lots of hides and tunnels etc and space for a labyrinth house and two wheels (eg flying saucer as well). It is still top opening but the door is much bigger so possible to put your arm in at an angle so it’s not quite the same as a hand from above. That isn’t cheap either though at about £90.
If you have a door off an old cage you could make a bin cage and attach the door to the front.

Re: New cage?
If you are in uk amazon have the duna maxi on sale at the moment (still expensive though). I have the large duna fun _ top shelf removed for 28cm wheel _ and use the bar section to attach ledges, tunnels and bridges to form a gallery level all around (my ham is not a bar biter but there is not much uncovered bar space if you do this). That way you get good overhead cover and extra exploring spaces. If you use deep bedding there is no height issue. For easy access I put the cage inside a large playpen and then remove the top two sections just leaving the base. That way hamster can run in and out as he wishes and won't be frightened by hands coming from above. I was concerned the cage would be too small (originally for an elderly hamster with mobility problems) and was planning to get the duna maxi but Skarloey seems very happy and even with the cage open on the floor prefers to be in there most of the time. If yours is a bar biter who wants lots of space this might not work for you though.

Can a hamster who have a top opening, wake up later because of the hand that comes from above?
I have noticed that top or front opening, is discussed, some people think that top opening is okay, but I have seen some that means to see a differense in the hamsters behaviour when changing from top door to front door. We have one hamster in a terrarium, one in duna fun because of bar chewing, but I might think I would like to try the barney for her because she is already tamed, and if she does chew the bars, it is okay, because the cage is cheap anyway

Re: New cage?
If she was chewing bars in the Hamster Heaven then it isn’t cage size but it could be cage set up- eg if something wasn’t right for her. But I would be cautious about getting another barred cage if she was bar chewing in that.

When she lived in the hamster heaven, she had a wheel, but a lot of uber in her cage did give her a little trouble, and then she had the green shelf in the cage. She now lives in a duna fun cage without the bars, and I have a terrarium, but it`s not available now, so I think I might would buy a duna maxi multy for her.

Re: New cage?
I think that sounds like a good choice. There is a hole for a water bottle in that cage which some hamsters can chew at but the solution is to block it with a nut and bolt - or better still with one of those carrot chews that screws to bars (comes with bathe screw nut).
