Default Living World Biodegradable Liners

so a few weeks ago I was asking about the Eco Living Habitat and how to protect the base (still waiting for it to arrive, problems with amazon)

I bought the hemp mat, but I also bought these:

Do you think they are safe? they say they are 'mainly' made with cornstarch.

I checked the packaging and can't see a breakdown of what they are made from

Hi Luna...does the base need protecting? What about using cardboard boxing? You could place the cardboard and fold it so a small edge formed against the glass? How deep are you going to go with the substrate? Hugs!

I don't know if they are safe if chewed or not. People have used them and not heard of any issues. From what I remember they are no good for waterproofing the base and are designed really to lift out all the bedding when cage cleaning.

I think personally I would paint the base with plastikote and/or put hemp mat on. I have had pee go through hemp mat on to wood occasionally but it's not that likely especially with substrate on top.

I would not use those at all. Liners, even "biodegradable" ones, should not be chewed let alone ingested for various reasons. They're probably made from a corn based plastic which sounds like a great idea but unfortunately plant based plastics aren't perfect by any means - they require specific disposal to be truly biodegradable without taking an extremely long time to decompose as one example. It's also important to keep in mind that something can be more biodegradable or even fully biodegradable and still unsuitable or even very dangerous to consume especially as a tiny hamster!

Hopefully you'll be able to return them or find an alternate non-hamster use for the liners you've purchased though.

I don’t think they would be safe if ingested either, plastikote on the base should be fine with no need for anything else.

yes, I don't think I was thinking straight when I bought them, not like me to buy something like this.

Amityville, I will return them. I think I thought they were paper based or something when I purchased them.

Serendipity, I will just stick with plastikote and hemp mat if the cage ever arrives. I think I was just being over cautious trying to add another layer of protection in. To be honest, I'm not sure how they would work, as they look like cady liners for compostable food and when thet gets wet they just disintegrate, so if it got pee on it, I can't see what protection it would have given.

Schwartzie, I was intending to go deep with the bedding I think what i am worried about is Twinkle likes to burrow right under his house down to the base of the cage, moves all the megazorb/aubiose out the way, then moves his food and paper bedding in to one cornner. I guess I could see how it goes and add cardboard if need be. I think I hadn't thought of that as just presumed it would get chewed, maybe at the cornners but not all over. Hugs back at ya, good to see you on here again.

I used plastikote on the base of my Livingwell green eco cages. It’s worked very well. I’ve not had any issues with urine or water damage.

I just went to return the liners back to amazon and for whatever reason they refunded me the original amount and the same again, also said I could keep the item, didn't need to return them. maybe because I said they weren't safe for purpose. Result. This also means I don't need to find someone to go and return them for me
